Another Cakewalk project with fairly budget gear!

Hey,

https://soundcloud.com/user-850954987/singing-the-blues

Here's another full Cakewalk production using modest gear. Real drums recorded via laptop with most expensive mics being Octavia overheads, and least expensive mics being a Samson Kick drum mic and several Prodipe TT1 mics for toms etc. Recorded into an RME Fireface and a Behringer Pro-8 Ultragain.

All other instruments are either virtual (Steinberg Halion Sonic for piano etc) or recorded in my little studio.

I'm a co-writer of this song and play most of the instruments apart from drums and acoustic guitar.

To keep things in the family I employed my girlfriend on backing vocals!

This song has come out of a regular Thursday night session with 2 local songwriters here in Cardiff. We get together and apart from drinking beer, try to come up with modern sounding contemporary pop/rock music. The guys have a lot of song ideas and this is the first full production job from what was essentially just an acoustic guitar and vocal idea with a drum machine backing.

Just realised it's Thursday as I post this - bring on the beer session, I mean music writing session ;-)

Out-frickin'-standing! Great dynamics, great mix, love the piano.

You do realize, though, that once your girlfriend's on a record you're stuck with her forever, right? I mean, if you wanted a new GF, that would now have to involve auditions. (Tell her I'm just kidding! She did a great job.)

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I like this except the drum sounds, (performance is fine). They don't sound like they are part of the same song (to me).

Piano overpowers the vocals IMO. Could be dropped back a tad.

Thanks for the comments. We just listened to the CD quality master and find the piano good. I think this maybe a consequence of Soundcloud compression. Drums? Yeah, we wanted something beefy and a little different.

As said your vocal is outstanding and although this song reminds me of one I can't yet recall, I think the mix is correct and the drums ...err maybe a little high, but for me I wouldn't change anything it's just picky ... so really good all 'round hope it does well for STUDIO 10 (Can you keep the noise down a bit, I can hear you in Westward Ho!)

It reminds me of 'I'd Rather Go Blind', especially the verse melody. Great performances though.

I thought it was very well done. My only suggestion is to maybe use a bit less compression / limiting. It's really only noticeable during the chorus.

Vocals were quite nice. Wish i could sing even a little bit.

Actually, I'm going to give it a go dropping the piano 1 or 2db. Thanks for lending your ears!

Aye, will try dropping drums 1 or 2db - after repeated listens it may be worth a tweak! Might give you some peace over in Westwood Ho.

I'll have another listen to see if there's any audible pumping I've missed :-)

It's not pumping Doug. It's more of a hard limiting issue.

By the way, I bought an MXL V63M about ten years ago. It's probably the cheapest mic I've ever owned, but it's the one I use the most. Sometimes cheap is better.

Really good pop/rock song.  Fat mix and everything was well performed.   Some of the bass lines were pretty sweet...

I find it interesting that every Thursday you and your friends get together to come up with a new piece of music.   Nice job on everything done here, including the songwriting and production.
