the Summer Januaries-- Comfort
Here's the title song from the Summer Januaries' most recent album, Comfort. https://summerjanuaries.bandcamp.com/track/comfort As we've been recording and mixing our new effort, I've been revisiting this album a bit, which came out in September 2016. This is the title track from the album, and was written and sung by Rachel, who's also playing guitar and fiddle on this track. Like our entire album, it's a house recording, this one tracked at our small place in San Diego, CA. We tracked the vocals, guitar, piano, drums, and viola live, and overdubbed the backing vocals and chorus and bass and other small details after the fact. We used the various rooms of the house as best as we could, with the drums and the piano in the largest room in the house (living room), Rachel's vocals in the small carpeted bedroom, her guitar amp and room mics in the large bedroom, and Mara our viola player in the back room with the computer and interface. All recorded and mixed in Sonar 8.somethingorother using mostly free or Cakewalk vsts.

Such a beautiful song. I love your words, I feel good words can take you to a place you couldn't otherwise find (if that makes sense). Can't fault the recording as it sounds quite professional. That's all I got, thanks for the posting

Loved the laid back feel to this song. It's a refreshing change. Actually, it kind of reminded me of the way loggins and messina used to ease in to songs.

Seems like a complex arrangement which you handled well. I like the back and forth movement of the lyrics. I thought there could be a more melodic element in there but that's just me. I enjoyed listening to your song.

Thanks for the kind words, Bjorn! I can't speak for Rachel (who wrote the song), but I know I struggle sometimes keeping my melodies simple enough to convey whatever the purpose of the song is. That is, my tendency is to complicate and decorate with the melody, but I find that certain kinds of songs and certain kinds of moods seem to be best suited by a simple melody, which can enhance the hypnotic effect of the rhythm etc. I think of Nick Drake "River Man", loads of Red House Painters songs, where the lulling sense of the rhythm and mood and melody would be broken by a more complex line. This was definitely a difficult song to arrange and mix! What ended up cracking it for me was treating the different sections as almost independent mixes from each other, because the needs were so different.
