Mangled recorded audio tracks Build 32 x64

Hi,

OK. Simple chain, mic into mixer out via SPDIF into audio card. In Sonar arm track, input monitoring working fine, almost zero latency, no clipping and I record something. Stop. Playback. The captured clip is mangled. Sounds like it's stretched (slowed) and very "digitally" distorted. Build 32 x64. Removed all plugins, same result.

I'd have suspected bit depth mismatch/sample rate BUT all driver settings, bit depths and sample rates match my X3 settings exactly.

Tried same procedure on my old Sonar X3 install and the entire chain is working perfectly. Records perfectly, plays back perfectly.

I *can* record audio in CBB Build 32 x64, BUT that audio clip created is slowed and distorted and completely unusable.

I've checked all the settings between CBB Build 32 x64 and Sonar X3 x64, nothing is any different.

Any ideas or help appreciated.

Thanks all.

Hi. Is your USB mixer and Audio Interface set to the same bit depth?
That sounds like a bit depth mismatch to me.
Others may know better.
All the best.
Edit: I didn't read the OP properly. But my guess is still a mismatch.

Which type of SPDIF cables do you use?

I believe it sounds like a clear sign of sample rate mis match as well but I would look in another direction first..
Clock.

Sonar need to be set as the slave in the options menu. but when using SPDIF you might have to switch the clock to SPDIF when tracking only.

Thanks for the replies. It absolutely *appears* to be a rate mismatch.

Except, all bit depths match. I've gone over every setting from X3 to CBB nothing is changed. X3 still works for me, so I guess I'll stay there for now.

Using a RCA type SPDIF cable. Not optical.

Clock is set to SPDIF and is in sync.

No issue with any version of Sonar till CBB. We go way back! :) I've raised a proper support ticket. I am totally stumped. I can open X3 and record audio in there and it works perfectly, CBB no go. Shame as that dark theme is really nice.

I am very grateful for all the replies. Thanks again.

"Sonar need to be set as the slave in the options menu. but when using SPDIF you might have to switch the clock to SPDIF when tracking only."

I have never had to do this. I can try if I know exactly where you mean.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

its usually in the soundcards options (clock). If the clock is not synched it can give distorted, out of synch results.
Do you know what sample rate your mixer is sending to the Focusrite ? If they are not the same it will also sound messed up.

Maybe you already mentioned it but I didn't see it, what sample rate are you running this project at ?

Made a little progress here. Thanks again for taking the time to reply everyone.

In CBB...

Preferences/Advanced/Clock/Source. If I change this to "internal", I can record and playback perfect audio in CCB as in X3.

However. Setting that to "internal", does not stick as a setting, and it changes back to audio as soon as the clip is recorded and then I'm back to square one. I can't have to open Prefs and set that clock to internal for every clip. :)

Any ideas?
I'm working at 44.1/24 right now, not on a Focusrite, though I have one here. I'm still using my trusty Delta Audiophile 2496 card. She's not let me down yet and works perfectly in Live 9 and 10, Pro Tools, Reaper, X3, it is just CBB is causing me a problem.
I have tested all the other DAWs this afternoon and they're all working fine at almost imperceptible latencies.

I reinstall of CBB wouldn't be the worst idea in the world I suppose.

Maybe give these settings a try to stop it switching:

The "Internal" setting for Source in Preference > Project > Clock  works with MIDI only project using hardware synths that are not input monitored.

If anything in the project requires a sample clock, the programs automatically sets Source to "Audio."

Further update: Problem goes away if I change

Preferences/Audio/Driver Settings/Audio Driver Bit Depth to 16 from 24.

It works perfectly set at 24 in X3 without issue. It will only work set to 16 in CBB.

Thanks for all the other replies. I tried forcing it to not switch, but it did not work.

Only setting to Audio Driver Bit Depth to 16 from 24 works.

I'll need to use X3 if I want 24 bit depth.

I really am very thankful to all those that took the time to send help and replies.

Seems odd that on the same machine and OS the driver bit depth setting cannot be set the same on both X3 and CbB. Might be worth letting support know

Thanks for the reply scook,

I have opened a ticket earlier today, I'll be sure to let them know the problem and the workaround.
