Questions for Superior Drummer 3 users
I am still on the fence when it comes to upgrading my Superior Drummer 2 to version 3 and I need to decide before the upgrade deal ends. It looks like its only about £10 more to get it on an SSD. Is anyone successfully running it off the SSD over USB3 or do you need to install to an internal drive? If so will the application read from both the SSD and from the drive containing the rest of the Toontrack SDX and EZX libraries? Would you consider, on sound, the new kits alone are worth the upgrade price? I assume if the SSD fails at some point the application and sounds are available to download from your account, is this the case?

Upgrade, but install to an internal drive. I have the samples on an M.2, loads projects “yesterday”! Only reason to get the SSD would be slow internet. Using the product manager makes maintaining all toontracks simple. Defining the sample paths should not be an issue. As to sound, it’s toontrack, and I have “toon” many libraries. T

Thanks, One more question, if you go for the download option can you skip downloading and installing the surround sound options if you don't need them?

Downloads for SD3 are divided in sections you can only download what you need. I think that you dont even need to download SD3 soundbanks it can be from SD2 or EZX packs.

I use Superior 3 on a meager desktop with just SD 2 and EZX libraries. Works fine. I have not downloaded any of the bleeds or surround sound files and 3 runs fine. I do have the full package installed on my laptop rig. Took 2 full days to download the full library. Back to the desktop. The added FX are well worth jumping to 3 even if you don't need the surround files. The FX really spruce up any older toontrack libraries you may have!

There is so much value in Superior Drummer 3. I downloaded everything but didn't install the surround stuff. The new kits are worth the upgrade in my opinion but the Tracker, Grid Editor, all the rods and mallets and brushes, all the FX, and Macros, importing audio and changing it to MIDI, the ability to take the snare and ride from one MIDI file and the kick from another, and what is it 7 new kits all recorded by George Massenburg. Go on YouTube and watch all the SD3 vids you can. There are lots of tutorials by Toontrack and Groove3. The value is unparalleled! The 7 kits would be worth it but there is so much more.

And you still have to make a backup. That's the real advantage to buying it on SSD, having an instant backup. I elected not to do that, because I was afraid I'd probably just lose the SSD. Instead, I bought a 3TB external USB drive that can hold all my backups in one place. Better odds of remembering where I last put that device.

I tend to misplace things, as well. I try to have "one place for everything...and everything in its place." Doesn't always work. The only really necessary rule? Don't store ANYTHING important in your back pocket.

Downloads going quite well. I should have all but the surround sound downloaded by this evening. I will keep one copy of the downloads on an external HDD for convenience to avoid having to download again if I have to reinstall. I will have a drive image of the drive its installed on as a further line of defense. For one time only downloads I like to keep an Acronis file backup of the installation files in another location too.

First impressions, without room mics and additional bleeds, I am very happy. I always preferred Toontrack's work flow to FXPansion and SD3 enhances that workflow and at the same time add features that should close the feature gap with BFD3. The kits i have previewed sound very good and I was pleased to find snare rolls and cymbal crescendos etc in the "extras" section of the MIDI

Yup, draw them in with a pencil. The dynamics control in the grid editor is also very cool.

One final question, is there any conceivable point in downloading and installing the surround sound stuff if you are only going to be using stereo. I imagine not but I wonder, could the surround mic perspectives be of use in a stereo mix?

I'm holding off on the upgrade until it is nearer to the cutoff date, as I'm thinking they might do something in the vicinity of a 15-20% discount (dreaming?) to get the last of their curmudgeon users onto the new digs.

You can still use the surround mics in just a stereo mix. You don't get the full fx but it does give you a good distance ambience to add to your arsenal. Great for John Bonham type room drums.

Thanks, Larry. I can say quite definitively now that its not at Plugin Alliance, although I am now an expert in their catalog. Thanks for the heads-up anyway, Glyn. I seem to remember the "in the cart price" being closer to $167 USD at Plugin Boutique so I'm going to wait until they take down the Toontrack "get-a-free-MIDI pack with SD3" deal to see if it goes back down.

The library that comes with SD3 is (IMO) superior to that of SD2. With SD2, the engineer ***loved*** the "click" on the mids (~2.2k) of the kick drums. With SD3, George Massenburg did a great job with the recording/engineering. Much more balanced sound... As far as where to put the library: - M.2 Ultra (NVMe) SSD is going to be the fastest as far as load time (~3400MB/Sec on Reads)
- SATA SSD is still good (~540MB/Sec on Reads)
- HD is going to feel slow (~200MB/Sec on Reads)
- Pair of SATA SSDs in RAID-0 is in-between M.2 Ultra and single SATA SSD (~1000MB/Sec)
SATA SSD in external USB-3 or USB-3.1 enclosure should yield the full speed of the SSD (or close). USB-3 tops out ~550MB/Sec
