Paste Special vs. Ripple Edit

I was trying to copy a section of a project (~20 tracks, MIDI and audio) and add it in again later in the project. It wasn't working for about 45 minutes until my brain finally kicked in and I looked at the "Options" drop-down in the track view and saw "ripple edit." Once I enabled it I was able to achieve what I wanted -- copy all the tracks, go to the new Now Time and insert the copied data there without overwriting or erasing anything. Before that, however, I was using the "Paste Special" function and selecting "Slide Over Old to Make Room." I never could figure out what was happening, but I seemed to be getting some tracks doubled, or maybe all the tracks. Whatever, it was unusable.

So my question is: What's the difference between ripple editing and Paste Special|Slide Over Old to Make Room? For me, the difference was one method worked, and the other didn't, but is there supposed to be some practical use for the "slide" function in "Paste Special?"

    I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment

Craig - For now I'm happy I got what I wanted. Until I hear otherwise, I'm guessing the "Slide Over Old to Make Room" option is just a vestigial feature that is not needed now that we have the ripple edit function. I haven't migrated to the Bandlab version yet. Maybe the "slide over" thing has been removed...?

When you use Ripple edit to copy part of your project to paste it in another place, "slide over old to make room" is totally unnecessary.

The 'Make Room' option is still available in CbB, but it's had problems for over a decade.
