New Motherboard and Processor

I just replaced my old motherboard and processor with a Asus Maximus X Code and a Intel i7 8700. The difference between it and my old Q6600 is extreme.  Running Cakewalk with a lot of plugins is fantastic. Its nice to see 12 threads at 3.2 gH to 4.7 gH. Nothing I have run has bothered it in the slightest. This is the first I have not been disappointed by a new processor.

Thanks guys. It is a beast. Nothing I throw at it in any way troubles it. It sits there and laughs. I have not overclocked it. It runs cool in my Cooler master Cosmos case.

Stratman I'm very glad you have one too. Its better than its specs or its generation. Also it seems they finally have designed a processor socket that is a joy to install to. This may be an Asus thing.

Its a gamers motherboard but it has all the features I want for an audio and video production computer.

That is a HUGE upgrade in performance!
You'll be able to run multiple convolution reverbs and dense mixes at small ASIO buffer sizes.
I doubt you'll rarely have to go above a 64-sample ASIO buffer size.

The Coffee Lake CPUs are amazing performers
    • 8700k (six cores, 12 processing threads @ 4.7GHz)
    • 8086k (six cores, 12 processing threads @ 5GHz)
    With a large/quality air-cooler, they'll run near dead silent.

    The perfect balance of cost/performance/quiet

Totally agree. My case is very quiet with 4 case fans plus one on the GPU and two on the removable HDs in front. And it is insulated. It takes air from the bottom and sends it out the top toward the rear.

My case also is super quiet. I was happy to learn that my Noctua NH-U12P that purchased for my Ivy Bridge 7 3770 was perfect for my new 8 grn i7 8700. The docs say no but I emailed Noctua (great support btw) and aske dif I could buy an adapter kit to use with new Z370 8 gen socket 1151 socket. To my surprise I was told you do not need any adapters it will fit the 1151 perfectly. And it does and is so quiet. I mean silent. Huge heatsink and 2 140mm fans. Plus 2 on the case and NO noise.

I actually have a spare NEW one which I will sell on craigslist here in florida I guess.

Forgot to ask John. You mention the 8700. Not the K. I also have the 8700 just didn't see the need to have a 95 watt processor for the small benefits since I do NOT overclock either. Also saved a few dollars. They also run hotter from my research.

That case sounds great. I have found builders tend to ignore the case. Also one big reason to build your own is a good case. Mine has only one issue it weights a lot.  Also a good quality power supply makes a huge difference.

Yes I have the I7 8700 not the 8700K. No. I don't overclock either. I don't have to with this baby. LOL It has a turbo mode that is automatic.  It will reach 4.7 MHz. To be candid I was looking at an i9 then I looked at the price of a good one and quickly looked at i7s.

The 8700k does not run particularly hot.
The advantage is that you can lock all six cores at 4700MHz.

OK I went and tweaked my audio system. My audio latency is 2.2 ms. I could go lower but I am a conservative type. I swear it sounds 20 to 40% better! :) It always sounded good now it sounds great.

More testing and further reports hopefully.

But they "do" run hotter is what I have read. Thats all I meant.... I have no need to worry about heat with my noctua with 2 140mm fans and a huge heatsink

John, why does a computer make it sound better? Latency?

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I tried a Noctua with dual fans and wasn't impressed with the temperature.  On my previous system I was using a liquid cooler and the CPU temps idled around 30 degrees C.  With my current i7 6700K build and the large Noctua heatsink (it barely fit in my case) and the two fans I was idling around 40 degrees C.  I replaced the Noctua with a "Captain 120EX" liquid cooler which is as quiet as the Noctua and my idle temps were back to the 30 degree C area temps and rarely go above 40 to 45 degrees C under load.

Its known as the placebo effect.

Though, in this case I did expand the full range of  frequencies on my digital mixer. From 40 Hz -16 kHz to 25 Hz - 20 kHz.

Also with this processor none of the projects cause it to work at all hard the performance monitor barely registers.  With a Q6600 it labored a lot. Dropping the audio buffer down to 64 samples makes no difference on the new processor, it couldn't care less. With the Q6600 it would not play at all.

With large/quality cooler, the 8700k doesn't run hot.

Using an air-cooler that's near dead-silent, the 8086k (all six cores locked at 5GHz) idles ~36-38 degrees Celsius.

My older I7  3770 ivy bridge with 32GB ram ran in the low 30's playing tomb raider, which only PC game I ever play. I have since it began way back when.

Thats weird because my i7 8700 with MSI GTX 1060 6GB and antec edge 750 PSU and 32GB ram runs runs at 30-32 and tops at 40's Also quiet as a mouse................
