For The Record - Seeking mix critiques

https://soundcloud.com/washedup-3/for-the-record-oct-19-mix

Hi, it's been a while since I've stopped in here, and it's been a while since I've mixed anything real ( as opposed to a singer and a track)

Anyway Hoping you can find my failings and set me on the right path.

    Cool 😎

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

So this was something you recorded for someone else in your studio or something like that? I thought it was a terrific song. Vocals and lyrics were great.

    Thank you!
A recording of our band, real drums with some Superior Drummer supplements, K S and toms, real bass, I did the guitars, singer did his own backups. and I have a simple midi piano doing a little thing in the bridge.

Still would love to hear any suggestions on the mix.

    Sixfinger,

Good song and overall mix.   I know you are looking for mix critiques but doubtful you will get any as the mix is pretty well executed overall.    Will throw out a few ideas on arrangement, which I think is really what the production needs to take it to the next level.    I would add an acoustic guitar as the primary rhythm instrument during the verses and keep the current fingerpicking eguitar as fill or ornamentation in a few key areas.   Really lock the acoustic guitar in with the drums and bass.   Then add a few ornaments here and there, could be a fiddle, steel guitar, guitar fills or guitar swells, piano, or whatever.

You don't need much, the song is a winner as is so take these suggestions with a grain of salt.   Hope there are some helpful suggestions here for you.

    Regards

Really a good song. And sorry, I can't comment on the mix since I'm not that good at it, but just wanted to share what I noted while listening.
I liked the part about looking in the mirror and then the "tell it all" delays, as if being repeated as a reflection. Well that's the way I took it.
The stereo separation at 2:19 seemed abrupt. Suddenly the singer is in the left channel (or right channel if I had my headphones on backwards) At least that was noticeable to me.
I couldn't figure out what the title of the song meant.
But like I said, it's a really good song and I enjoyed the listen.

This is great. Lyrics and melody compliment each beautifully. Playing is super. Vocals are excellent. Sentimental without being maudlin. Very, very pro sounding. Terrific job.

The mix, I think the bass and kick could use a bit more definition or a bit more presence. I’m listening on cheesy phones (that’s all I have at the moment). But you’ve got a really nice tune and for me , that’s what matters most (although you were not asking for a critique of the. Song).

Listening through decent headphones at quite a low volume, I can pick out everything, so I reckon that says 'good mix'. Markno999 has some nice production ideas though.

Thanks so much for the input and the ideas!  It really is helpful to get some outsider ears involved.

Keep'em coming and we'll get it closer and closer to as right as we can.

Well nice one here! The thing that leapt out at me was that neat, full bass. It just supports the song beautifully. I would turn it up  -just -a -skosh. Not more than a skosh!

Main vocal is a little dry, maybe the dreaded reverb needs to be turned up?

Maybe the snare, add a little top end back? IT could be brighter and still not f up the vocals.

It's a really really good mix!

I think this mix is really good! Plenty of breathing room for all the parts, and everything sits nice and tidy. Great job!
