The Long Night
Sound library composition. No piano roll input. All played in by hand. All done in CbB. I had to take the original song down due to an oversight on my part. I have a screen capture I'll post later on for anyone who wants to see some of the workflow that made this. https://soundcloud.com/st...starise-the-long-night

Interesting composition that meanders its way through the musical soundscape. It could do with a touch more dynamics but that aside, an enjoyable tune.

Sounds very involved, a screenshot would be cool! You certainly have a good handle on mixing, and for hand-playing it all in, good timing as well. Nice job! I also see an overall dynamics issue with the composition itself - very consistent volume throughout - is there a soft spot in there? The choral voices in the background are killer. The overall rhythmic cadence is easy to hang on to. But there really isn't much "build it up, bring it down" . . . so if you were aiming for a medieval Game of Thrones jam, I think you've got it just fine. This would be just awesome, cranked inside an old stone castle. cheers, -Tom

Wow, I really like this one. I'm picturing a nightime march in a Celtic bog, cold and foggy with weird creatures hiding behind rocks. I think it needs a break from the relentless forward motion tho. There is a pause in the action around 2:20, but I thought it could be developed a bit more, then ramp back up to that driving march.

Interesting piece. I wouldn't call it classical. It's closer to Celtic in my mind. Really enjoyed it Star Man! Bill

Biodiode- I never liked "meanders" as a description of one of my tracks, but I must admit. It does a little and could use a lift of some kind. Thanks for commenting. Tom- I plan to put up the screen shot in the future. I think I was aiming more for classical instead of epic in terms of dynamics. Seems similar to limiting and the loudness wars. If I don't make it dynamically epic it won't stand out. I tracked into the master bus at -6db or less. I used some automation. I have another example here of a more epic track I did here- https://soundcloud.com/starise/far-gale-composition-by-stariseI went too far the other way there. Thanks for your comments. Bjorn- Thank you for your comments. Word about the creatures wasn't supposed to get out. Bill- Thank you for listening. Believe it or not the meaning of the term "Celtic" is argued by Irish and Scots all the time. The Irish folk musicians think the genre is a made up thing. The only real Irish music in their minds is Irish folk music. Some theorize it came along with Enya and the like. Some of that is true in terms of introduction into mainline modern music. I see it more as the music that was before Irish folk music came along or they might have been companions along the line. The only connection to folk types is probably the modal types. Celtic is usually slower though. Irish folk is more like drinking tunes.

Me mudder was a Hackett. Believe me, most of us don't make distinctions. Call it folk, Celt, whatever. We don't care as long as it's good. Bill

Hi, Tim, This is really great! Lots of interesting twists and turns and little intricacies, and excellent playing and composing skills. That must have taken quite a while and lots of planning to play those parts in one section of instruments at a time! Which orchestration library did you use for this? It really sounds fantastic! Anyway, really good stuff, Tim! Have a good one, buddy! Bob

I enjoyed this Tim. I get what others mean about dynamics, but there's plenty going on to keep the interest up.
