In what case is "Linear" EQ suppose to be used?

In what case is "Linear" EQ suppose to be used? I always set it to "Nonlinear" or it will cause dropouts.
I'm guessing it's used for the Mastering stage of a stereo track.

Anytime after tracking when latency is not a problem. While featuring a different EQ this video may help
