P5 or Live?

Please accept my apology if this topic has been covered previously. I searched back to January 20 and could not find anything.

How does (will) Project 5 Version 2 compare to Ableton Live version 4? I've never really done much research into Live, but it seems to really have a huge base of loyal devotees.

My gut continues to tell me that P5 is going to be the software package for me, but I'm sure many members of this forum are familiar with both packages, so I'm interested to hear.

Thanks in advance.

In the past, Live won hands down... but by April, 2005 (P5 V2) - I don't honestly know... I love what Cakewalk seems to be implementing...

I've done some live gigs in the past with Live... and have yet to do live gigs with P5 (may try some with V. 2) - My personal preference (for the time being) is to not do gigs with laptops... I use my Roland MV-8000 quite happily for live stuff... - IMHO laptops will be up to the challenge in about a year to a year and a half...

As for systems... it's quite simple (for me at least):
    ***Pardon my OS analogy... (geek!)***
    1) Reason - closed system (i.e. Microsoft)
    2) Live - "open" system - but very "Ableton-centric" (i.e. Sun Microsystems / unix / java)
    3) Project 5 - truly open system and not "centric" at all (i.e. Linux)

As its name implies, Live was conceived as a kind of instrument/sequencer that you could play live. The fundamental requirements are rock steady stability and the ability to add wave and midi clips to the mix on the fly. Furthermore, the clips are beat matched. Live manages to do these thing very well.

Live uses the Z-Plane Elastique algorithm (same as FL Studio) for timestretching and pitch shifting, it's very good indeed and a free demo copy can be obtained from http://www.zplane.de The beat matching really is very impressive (if you need it)

There is one fundamental problem with Live: I don't actually like it much. It maybe because it looks like a spreadsheet or it could be the clostrophobic feel of everything cramped at the bottom of the screen ... I just don't seem to be able to do much with it other than produce loops that I then use else where. Others probably love it and good luck to them !

Thanks for the quick and very informative replies, guys. I am definitely waiting for Project 5 V2. There seems to be a trend toward these software packages being more live-playing friendly, which I think is great. Maybe Ableton Live started that trend, I don't know. But Reason v3 sure is making that one of their keystone marketing focuses, and Project 5 V2 mentions it as well.

Like GM, I've been very wary of taking a PC/Mac based setup out to live gigs (I use MPCs, although I do lust after an MV-8000 V3). But I think with this new crop of software packages, it may be time to re-think that strategy. Whether with a laptop or mini PC, I think computers are getting reliable enough to be able to count on them during a live gig. And so are the software packages that run on them.

I just hope Project 5 v2, with it's "new audio engine", uses many less CPU cycles, has a tighter groove (better timing?), and is rock-solid reliable - i.e. no crashes. If so, then it could finally be the package that enables me to use a computer and soft synths/samplers on a live gig, instead of hardware MIDI rack modules (which of course I would keep close at hand for a backup!)

Thanks again for the great replies!
