I'm sure the more etheral people, or at least the people with less laxatives in their system could answer.

B.T.W. whats wrong with P1 or P1.5 or P2 anyways...other than a lack of imagination?

The naming convention is 'borrowed' from the old Babylon5 television series. In paralleling the series' plot line, the first four versions of the 'Project' also disappeared under mysterious circumstances (although #4 has this nasty habit of returning after travelling through time. Don't ya' hate when that happens?). I know this for a fact because I just saw Hendershott & Co. at a convention, and they were all dressed as Minibari. [BTW: I was Zathras.]

The parallels go one step further, as they consider themselves the Federation/Alliance, and we are but Shadow vessels. That's OK; did you ever hear that sound that the Shadows emit, even in the depths of deep space and total vacuum? Somewhere between a human scream and metallic synthesis; awesome.

I really hope that this isn't the common reaction to the next version. A name like that just might stick ...

I always thought it was because there were 5 synths in P5: PSYN, DS864, nPulse, Velocity, Cyclone.

    b-rock,

Are you sure on this? My guess would have been a subtle reference to the M5 computer from Star Trek "The Ultimate Computer" (versions 1 through 4 "not being entirely successful"). Of course the system architect did suffer complete nervous breakdown over it and we wouldn't want to wish that on the Cake'ers.

I grew up around the Boston area, eventually living in Boston and working in Cambridge, and can attest to the presence of a hotbed of Trekkies, er Trekers. Must be the proximity to MIT -- too many geeks, too little nice weather -- and the fact that Leonard Nimoy grew up around the corner.

But why not call the app. "Londo 5" or "G'kar 5"? "Project White Star"?

And yes, loved the sound of the Shadow vessels! Anyone got a sample of that?

There is one here, but it sounds like it came from one of the earlier episodes where there was just a hint of ominous foreboding. That, or one of those little mini-Shadow fighters. I'm looking for that full-fledged mothership 'agonized' sound myself. You may have that at your fingertips, though. How 'bout something like Sound Forge in the remote mode slicing a sample of the sound off one of those DVDs?

You may be right about the Trek connection, though. Look at that new interface in v.2. Straight off of Uhura's communication post.
"Captain, she can't take much more o' this; she's already pushing 110% CPU"
"Steady as she goes, Mr. Scott. I ... just need ...a few ... more synth tracks ..."

Thanks b-rock. That is kinda weak. I will have to do better.

Interesting that you brought up Sound Forge as I am looking to get some kind of beat slicing tool so that I can create some content for Cyclone. I have FL Studio but the Fruity Slicer is utter crap. They apparently are trying to coax you into upgrading to the full Beat Slicer or Beat Creator apps. What would you say is the best tool for this? Sound Forge?

I do have one restriction though and that is that I will not buy into anything that uses Challenge/Response (or worse, Dongle) license "management". So this leaves out the Kontact line and SampleTank among others. Any information would be greatly appreciated. As quid-pro-quo I will give you your shadow vessel "fingernails on a blackboard" squeal directly from DVD.

And I've always wanted base a song around various samples of Bones saying "Damn it Jim! I'm a doctor, not a <insert metaphor here>!"

p.s. Digital Aura -- was there ever any doubt in your mind that is the geek squad? Afer all what is techo if not the ideal intersection of technology and music?

Damn, Bradster! I know that I answered this one last night! I must've hit Cancel; I guess it was much too soon after the Calle Ocho street party to answer intelligently, anyway. There was quite an in-depth discussion about this topic at the forum a while back; I have to hunt down the link(s). It appears that Sound Forge omits some metadata from its .wav files that are required by Cyclone to slice with any efficiency. I still think that it has to do with the .ovw files that're generated alongside the .wav file in an Acid Pro application. I use Acid Pro 4.0d [pre-Sony] for the task, but, of course, Sound Forge as well for most all other .wav editing chores.

You may want to wait & see what Project5 v.2 has in store for this. The promos promise a lot, but we won't know for sure for another six weeks, or so. Sure would be nice to do everything under one roof. And, yes, I sure would like a HQ sample of that 'shadow squeal'; even a 'rough grab'. I'll edit it later. I've got the sound on VHS, but it's just not the same ...

Geek? I've been aspiring to that title all of my life, but that's one thing that continues to elude me. It's something about the taped horn-rim glasses & sporty pocket protectors that screams "Tres cool".

Thanks b-rock, that is helpful information. My curiosity was piqued a couple of weeks back with the SampleTank group buy (and all the rave reviews from Harmony Gardens and the rest), but the further I dug into the whole sample realm, the more I realized how much I have yet to understand. Especially around the various formats. I thought I had it "down" since I already grasped the concept of ACID-ized loops, but this slicing thing is a whole ball of wax. (slicing wax, hmmm???).

I still use my trusty Cool Edit 2000 for wav editing and MP3 encoding. It dices but doesn't slice. So maybe I can wait for P5V2 and see if the cakes (in my best Dr. Evil) "...throw me a friggin' bone here".

While all the samplers proclaim their proprietary formats are better because they store more metadata, in the end it's always a risk to buy into a single vendor solution (and invest lots of $$$ on sample libraries), only to have the vendor evaporate, get bought out, or simply decide to migrate to another format. SF2 appears to be one of the more common plug-n-play formats but doesn't seem to get much respect with the more pro-centric crowd.

To further complicate matters, I've amassed quite a bit of .wav's as both ACID-ized loops and small samples. But it's impossible to say, for instance, which ones are sliced without importing them into Cyclone one at a time. A worthwhile tool might be a universal browser that would display metadata information about the various samples littered about one's hard drive (ACID yes/no, Sliced yes/no, sample rate, bit depth, etc.).

And yes, geek is the new punk. From the wealth of knowledge that you seem to impart in these forums, I'd say you're well on your way....

    Cheers,

    B'ster

p.s. I'll get that B5 sample to you as soon as I'm back in L.A. (out in Palm Springs for the month w/o DVD's -- only music!)

hey...i like that nickname for Tom! the B'ster! nice!

I guess I should check out Cyclone again.... would you believe I have only opened it about two times? I never understood it...or better yet... I never understood what type of application it was intended for.
