exporting individual audio files
Hey P5-ers, I'm at work - so can't "see" my P5 right now... But I have a quick and basic question... When exporting audio from a P5 piece, is there a setting to export each track individually? (i.e. so that I can transfer it to other programs, etc.?) I work with a Mac Pro Tools guy - and in the past, I've been able to get him files by exporting them individually from Sonar (prior to the OMF export, btw) - but I haven't seen a similar option when exporting from P5... 1) Is this in P5 currently and am I not seeing it? 2) Is this planned for V2? - Grandpa Mojo www.grandpamojo.com

hey mojo sr. through judicious use of track markers and the bypass (hidden in the context menu on the track area that displays the synths, controls the outputs etc.) one can bypass all tracks except the one you're interested in, set the track markers and use export to generate a single track wav file do that a few more times and you have a set of individual tracks that make up a project, suitable for walking over to another host (that can play full-length audio i.e. not Groove Player) for mixing or dicing/splicing etc.. on smaller sections this is also a useful method for generating a potential loop for acidizing or whatever. despite the wonders coming in P5 v2 (including freeze and teh ability to v=create groove clips), I think this bypass and export method is still likely to be a useful in some circumstances

Yeah... I'm looking at 23 tracks... oof!... That's what I was afraid of... - that it was a "track by track" kind of thing... - I was hoping for a single "send em all" macro - like what is in Sonar... Is it too late to request a feature for P5 VII? Thanks for the info... - Grandpa Mojo www.grandpamojo.com

coffee in Britain? You're such a rebel, blipp. with 23 tracks, it might be possible to combine closely related tracks. once all the levels and automation are just perfect also with track markers one can avoid recording vast areas of silence but then the pieceing back together is error prone individual tracks do provide the greatest flexibility it is one of those techniques that requires some precision in setting it up and then waiting -- probably the most error prone combination

How about re-wiring into Sonar, doing a bounce down to individual audio tracks in Sonar and then your usual OMF export? Might be slightly less painful that way. I don't know if Sonar will do a simultaneous bounce of several re-wire tracks separate Sonar tracks - if it will, then this way is not that bad at all...

Good ideas, guys. In addition to the obvious benefits for mixdown, I can see some other uses for an easy individual .wav file exports. As a matter of fact, I think that the new audio features in P5 almost demand having that feature. One train of thought started with the Velocity Guitar stuff, as part of a companion toolkit. We need to find a quick & reliable method of making our own samples from soft-synths, FX chains, etc. for further manipulation as samples. That provides you with a whole palette of processing modules to shape your sounds. Say that you have a favorite patch from one of your synths. You could put together a folder of 128 'patterns'; each one contains a single MIDI note covering the entire range from C0 to G10. Make them all one measure long, for easy slip-editing. [It sounds like a lot of work, but you just have to drag the note up one semitone, then save the pattern.] Then, when you want a scale of notes that cover (for example) a two-octave range of the Super Locrian scale, you drag in the appropriately named patterns and export the 25 .wavs to their own sub-folder. You can use a similar tactic to make 'drum kits' from your own soft-synth collection. Now you have a custom set of sampled notes from your favorite synth patch ready for import into the DS864, Cyclone, Velocity, and, yes, the new Dimension synth. It may appear like the 'long way home', but the possibilities for your synths just multiplied exponentially.
