When I record a track, the previous track records along with it.

It's a little hard to describe, so bear with me:

1) I record a rhythm guitar track.
2) I add a new track, arm that, make sure the rhythm track isn't armed, and record my lead guitar part. So far, so good.

I play the results back, and it sounds good. Both lead and rhythm track play simultaneously. I mute the lead track (the second track) and the rhythm track plays alone. However, if I mute the rhythm track (the first track) I hear both the rhythm AND the lead track together. It seems that when I record the second track, it's picking up the first track also.

Any suggestions? I remember someone mentioning a "record what you hear" setting on the soundcard, but I can't find anything like that on mine.

thanks.

How are you recording the lead part? Line out from the amp? Or with a microphone in front of the amp's speaker? Is the rhythm part playing through your speakers while you record the lead, or are the speakers off, and you're monitoring with headphones? Have you had this problem before? Did you thoroughly search your sound card's program's settings for a 'what u hear' option? Did you turn off input monitoring? I think that's in the MC audio options, and maybe in the sound card. Did you do any adjustments to the latency? Greg

I'm using a Line6 Guitar Port direct into the sound card. I use headphones, and the speakers are off. Input monitoring is off. I'm not sure where to look for a "what you hear" option. I go to "control panel, sounds and audio devices, audio" but I don't see anything like that.

The What U Hear everyone talks about stems from the Windows software mixer - your sound card may call it something different.
read this - it talks about the mixer and how to get to what you hear.

Your problem could be with your sound card also. What kind of card are you using?

What is it I'm supposed to read?

The soundcard is a SoundMax digital audio.

    Sorry 'bout that.
    Try this http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Lessons/WindowsMixer.asp

Also try this: [Remember your previous settings so that if it doesn’t work you can go back if need be.]

    1. Select MME interface: Options | Audio | Advanced | (Playback and Recording)
    [check] "Always use MME interface.."
    2. Correct input monitoring: Options | Audio | Input Monitoring | [unselect/unhighlight]
SoundMAX digital audio (or other SoundMAX audio card option)

This procedure comes from the help file: “Your sound card may not be capable of full-duplex operation or Wave-Out Position Timing”
If that doesn’t work, it wants you to continue with subsequent suggestions. – Search for 'Dropouts and Other Audio Problems' in the Help file.

I believe the full name of your card is Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, and a solution may not be possible.

The key is the ‘half-duplex’, whether it is the cause of the problem has not been determined; however, it is known, that Music Creator requires a FULL-Duplex Card.
This Soundmax card is based on the AC97 spec., one of the more notoriously bad, on-board sound chips/cards [most of them are]. They work well on games and such but when stressed as in programs like MC they don't seem to do well.
You can find many problems with the SoundMax on the various Cakewalk Forums. I’m not sure anyone has come up with solutions.

If none of this works, sadly, you may have to purchase an add-on sound card.
    Good Luck!

    Thanks for the input, Bill.

I already had all the options you mentioned selected/checked/enabled. It's not that huge of a deal since I use MC as sort of a "digital sketchbook" to record guitar riffs for personal use and self-critique. I'm not going to be recording complete songs or sending out demos anytime soon, so I'll live with the limitations and quirks of MC.

Not to be controversial I don't think the problem is with Cakewalk. [And trust me, anyone who has been on this forum long knows how angry a critic of Cakewalk I have been - and still am when the shoe fits. - Documentation for one]

    But
I believe the problem is with the computer manufacturers who are loading their computers with these half enabled chips that are primarily designed for game playing. Yours is not a MIDI problem, which is the most common because the AC97 and SoundMax do not have MIDI Ports, but I would guess that of the people having the problem you describe, well over half are using an AC97 or SoundMax.

Now that is a first. I actually gave a soft defense of Cakewalk. When could that ever happen again?
