Stop button causes sound to hang

I'm still stuck on HomeStudio 2002 (sorry) ... since installing XP sp2, whenever I hit the stop button, the program hangs and the last note keeps playing until I end task.

Have 512mb RAM, so this shouldn't be the issue ... remebering it used to work okay.

Soundcard is Creative SB Live 5.1.

I went back to an earlier version of HS and the same thing happens ... are there issue with SP2?

Sounds like your MIDI files are hanging when you stop playing in the middle of a project.

Not knowing HS 2002 I can't tell you exactly how to solve this but it should be in your HELP file. Perhaps another member with HS2002 experience can give you more precise info.

Soundcard may not be the culprit. MIDI "hangs" are not uncommon. As stated earlier, I haven't any experience with HS2002...In HS2XL there is an icon on upper toolbar that looks like a yellow exclamation mark inside a circle. It is a "reset" button that acts as a MIDI "Panic" button. That should stop the MIDI hangs. I also have found that by tapping the "sustain" foot pedal connected to my MIDI keyboard controller the "hangs" stop.

Papa, if tapping your Sustain Pedal stops your MIDI hangs, maybe the pedal is sticky/dirty inside?
I'd assume you already thought of this, but it's worth a mention.

    Try this:

    Options / Project / Midi Out /
then place a check in the box next to "zero controllers when play stops".

    see if this works.

    let us know

    Slugbaby,

Thanks for the input, but what I meant was a MIDI track playback hanging when I'm not even playing the keyboard but, since MIDI data from the keyboard is still being fed to CW's MIDI input, a tap or two on the sustain pedal stops the hang. I don't get the "hang" problem very often. It usually occurs after I've been working on the same project for several hours (5 or more) at a time. I am, admittedly, not a MIDI expert by any means. I know a little more than the basics (although, I am studying tons of reference materials and experimenting with advanced methods to, hopefully, become better versed in the applications MIDI is capable of performing).

Thanks, again, for trying to help.

    Regards,
    Papa

Just reinstalled again ... this time I'm getting the following error message:

The following frivers either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another application: Vinyl AC'97(Wave); SB Live! Audio (E800)

I've checked for later drivers but can't find any and, as far as I know, there's nothing open to use the drivers. The only things running are Zone Alarm, AVG and Palm sync, in sys tray...

What driver mode are you using? (Options-Audio-Advanced). For the SoundBlaster, you should be using WDM or ASIO mode. I would disable the AC97 in Windows Device Manager and just work with the SoundBlaster since it is the better of the two.

Hi .. thanks for the suggestions ..

I've deleted AC'97, as suggested. Can't find a driver mode in Cakewalk ... just had a thought ... did you mean at the driver level outside of Cakewalk?

    Sorry if it's a dumb question ...

Driver mode is in the Options-Audio menu somewhere. They moved it in the 2004 version so its in a different place now, but it was there in 2002 and its the most important setting in HS so I suggest you find it and change it to WDM or ASIO.

I've tried everything suggested so far, with no luck ... However ... I've noticed that while I'm creating a file, the problem doesn't exist .. I can stop and start as often as I like.

Once it's saved and I try to play it again, the hanging begins ... got me beat
