Yamaha SW1000XG/DSPF and NForce3

I have recently upgraded my DAW to use an Athlon64 4000+ in an MSI Neo2 Platinum motherboard. All has gone well but I can reliably crash the PC if I let Windows output audio through my Yamaha SW1000XG card. I have an M-Audio Delta as my main audio interface, so it's not a disaster, but I do like to use the SW1000XG's onboard DSP effects occasionally so would like to resolve this if possible.

The crash is not a BSOD, just a lockup; mouse pointer will not move and sound card repeats the last buffer's worth of audio until I hit the reset switch.

I know that some users (Neilius, Harvey Cedars) have reported problems with the SW1000XG/NForce3 combo in the past, but wondered if anybody had spoken to Yamaha about this, or made any other progress. I haven't tried rearranging my PCI slots yet, but suspect that the Yamaha drivers aren't coping with being on IRQ18 - something which is likely with any modern, APIC-based motherboard. I don't have any IRQ conflicts by the way.

I've got the same mobo (maybe mine's a Neo Plat, as it's socket 754 which AMD don't do a 4000 in?) and a SW1000XG too. I'm hoping to use the midi sounds + effects, but not WAV playback

I had crashes with it on an nForce 2.

Please do post if you mange to sort it out.

    Thanks

OK, I've spoken to Yamaha-Kemble's tech support department this morning. They don't have any definite info on the problem, but seemed to think it likely that the SW1000XG may be incompatible with recent chipsets.

The PCI bus speed was mentioned as a potential issue; it's touchy about speeds above 33MHz. I can't see any PCI bus speed settings in my BIOS, but I believe the NForce3 Ultra chipset is meant to have a PCI lock so this shouldn't really be an issue. Does anybody know of a way to measure the PCI bus speed in software?

The card seems to be ok for MIDI-only use, so I shall carry on using it as a MIDI module from now (at least until I get a crash whilst using it...!). Even better, I wonder if there's anybody likely to produce an SW1000XG-emulating softsynth... ;-)

One thing I do know about this card, if you are using the digital output of the SW1000XG it has to be the clock master in the system. I know that from using the card with a DSP Factory setup.
