Noise Problem with EWS88D

Hi, i am a newbie here...

I recently updated sonar 3 to sonar 4.
now I have the noise problem on audio tracks.

I tried pretty much all I could do to solve the problem,
like things listed on trouble shooting and other problem I had with Sonar 2 and 3 in the past.
EWS88D was working fine with sonar 2 and 3 until now.
I might need to get a new PC... but I thought I'd give it a shot on this forum.

ADM athlon XP 1600+
1.4GHz
760MB of RAM
2 NTFS 160GB and 60GB hard drives
EWS88D and EWX24/96

the mixer I use for digital I/O is Rolands VM3100.
so I can't use the sampling rate bigger than 44.1kHz.

AUDI.INI file is following

btw, the noise i am experiencing right now is

    >you may occasionally experience a "glitch" or "pop" during audio playback

    that.

    Just some thoughts:

    1. Your latency setting seems to be 10ms on the card and 100ms in Sonar - I usually use a 2:1 ratio with Terratec, ie if 10ms in Terratec Control panel, then 20ms in Sonar Options->Audio

    2. I've found my EWS88MT works best when set to 24 bit Drivers (even when recording at 16 bit). These are set through Options->Audio

    3. You seem to have quite a few of your input/output drivers disabled? I'd enable them all in Sonar except System Wave.

    4. Have you tried switching to ASIO drivers and back?

    5. Have you tried reinstalling the latest drivers?

Maybe one of these might help.

    Mine goes bannanas with WDM/KS

Try ASIO if you have'nt. use say 128k buffers for usable latency.

Delete aud.ini and reprofile maybe too.

yes it was 20ms, but not working. so i was trying every latency setting.

    2. I've found my EWS88MT works best when set to 24 bit Drivers (even when recording at 16 bit). These are set through Options->Audio

right now, it's not working at all.
gets the serious burst noise, even with Stream>16 bit data as 3 bytes.
of course, i tried everything there.

    3. You seem to have quite a few of your input/output drivers disabled? I'd enable them all in Sonar except System Wave.

yes, they were enabledwhen i had sonar 3. i disabled them to see if it works better.

    4. Have you tried switching to ASIO drivers and back?

    yes, and it is worse...

    5. Have you tried reinstalling the latest drivers?

yes, drivers of ews88D and ewx24/96 are both up-to-date.
    version 5.43.3.134.
    I'll reinstall them again.

Delete aud.ini and reprofile maybe too.

it seems like I erased AUD.ini 1000 times today...
and so far it only works with WDM/KS.

i was working on this, of course, without any background activieis.
no networks, no norton and etc.

    i tried 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 on I/O buffer size.
    the results were the same.

I changed the outlets too. it brought the same results.

I really don't know what seems to be the problem.
If you can tell me what I did wrong here,
You'll make me the happiest person in the world.

Sorry you're having trouble, rpo. It's really unclear why you'd be getting pops and clicks just by upgrading to S4. This changes nothing in your hardware, otherwise I'd be having you check for IRQ conflicts and adjusting the PCI latency of your graphics card.

My first thought when I saw this thread was that something got messed up in the Options > Audio settings. I see you tried the Stream > 16 bits setting. You didn't mention this, so just in case you didn't already, you want to make sure to adjust this after you re-profile your card, not before. Profiling the audio card forces that setting to a default value. So, if you ever re-profile your card, you need to go back and manually set Stream > 16 bits.

You know, just the other day I found on my system that the setting of Stream > 16 bits = 3 bytes got magically changed to 4 bytes. I was getting weird behavior, distortion and noise. I can assure you that I would not have changed it on purpose, and I did not consciously re-profile my card. But when I looked there, sure enough, it was changed. Changed it back, and it was clean as a whistle.

By the way, are you using ADAT? It's a bit of a long shot, but did you try setting the VM3100 mixer as Wordclock Slave and the EWS88D as Master? I think your problem may actually be somewhere else, but anyway this is my preferred setting. Best wishes and blessings in your search.

yes, i read your post from 2004 and followed exactly what it was written.

oh yes, the picture show s that it's external. but it was originally internal. so ews88d was the master.
I really don't understand why it's acting like this. I'll use the defrag tonight and see it's gonna be better..

    thanks.
