pops, clicks and dropouts

Hi,
I have pops/clciks/distortion on even 1 track of audio within about 20 seconds of recording (not only on playback but actual recorded wave). I have stopped all unnessecary services and processes, sample rate on Motu and in Sonar are the same. I am really at a loss with this....
I am using Sonar 4 Prod., Motui 828mkii, Windows XP Svce. PK 1 (can't do Svc. pk. 2 due to infinite boot loop issues), 1.2 Ghz intel cpu, 256 Megs RAM.

any ideas?
thanks very much!

    Greetings Tobin,

First, you've got issues with your computer and that's a bad thing for a program as strong as SONAR --- you're going to have to figure out how to get SP.2 installed --- whatever is wrong is wrong!

One of the best lessons I ever learned from an old technician was "Never skip one problem and try to work on another one, always fix the first problem first. Then fix the next problem next, etc., etc."

Then, and only then, you need to make sure you are running with the latest SONAR 4.0.2 patch, and the latest MOTU drivers, and run waveprofiler, etc., etc.

    Regards,
    David

P.s., of course it may just be clipping on the input.

Be careful also with residents... I recently had a small resident in the taskbar (sysinternals process explorer) and it is just showing the cpu usage. Strangely this resident was generating pops and clics on recording and playback! just shutting it down solved my issues.
One thing that I usually check with pop and clicks is to see if they happen at the same time than an access to the hard drive: just look at your hard drive led and see if the pop and clicks are related. Is your hard drive connected to the intel IDE connectors or do you have an extra RAID card (on the motherboard or on PCI) ? The extra IDE controller was generating clicks on my previous motherboard.
Other things to do is upgrade the video drivers, eventually upgrade the video card (they are very cheap these days)... Also try reducing the color depth on windows, this might save some bandwidth on your pci bus.
Try too using the ASIO mode with your motu, I find that ASIO is working better with my m-audio.

    Erik.

I would also suggest adding more RAM. 256MB doesn't seem like nearly enough for ull use of Sonar.

RAM is clearly the first issue here - not to say that something else might show up after the RAM is taken care of.

thanks, you all. I actually tried Svc. Pack 2 again, and it installed successfully. So now I'll verify that all my drivers and software patches are up to date. I figure I should get some RAM, too, but the clicks and pops, although present sometimes before, only recently got super bad.

256MB isn't enough for Windows --- I always recommend at least 512MB --- it's the fastest easiest upgrade you'll ever do. I'm using 1.5Gb --- these days it's pretty cheap.

    Hey Andy,

Instead of posting a series of replies to yourself, you can edit your original post by clicking on the Edit at the upper-right-hand of your message. It's much cleaner and neater. And, as you can see it won't affect your message count either way.

well, I updated my MOTU drivers and disabled "Enable Read Caching" and "Enable Write Caching" within SONAR (as recommended by hekp file), which I had probably checked in a fit of frustration. Anyway, it SEEMS like it is much better now, but I have to a more substantial check later.

I got you, David, I know - I do need to get some RAM!

    thanks again,

Probably not at all your issue. But when is the last time you defragmented your hard drive? Might be surprised at how many little annoying quirks that simple step can reduce.
