What sound card are you using? If it's an Audigy/Sound Blaster, turn off the "What You Hear" in the Audigy.

I have a Sound Blaster, and with win2k there isn't a "What you hear" box to tick...I have the same problem as the OP, and can only get around it (so far) by recording in CoolEdit
then dropping the *.wav file into CWPA then sliding the track until it matches what's already there...PITA. I'm a Noob so I'm sure I've missed something in setup, still going
    through the Manual...

You can turn off the metronome (I'm assuming that's what you mean by tempo sound). The metronome can play during recording and during playback. Is it possible the metronome is set to play during playback?

PS: If I remember correctly, the "What you hear" option can also be called something like "Stereo Mix" and they appear in the recording options of the Windows mixer (the speaker icon in the system tray), not the playback section.

Now with a new card, if I turn off "What You Hear" then I can't render the SW Synth midi data to audio...
I think that Larry has it right - turn off the metronome...now if I can remember where the dang thing is...

In old CakeWalk Professional (3.0), it is the first choice under the "Settings" tab.
    Try that, it may work.

    In pro9 it is:
options, project, clickm on metronome tab and uncheck playback and recording. The metronome will not play then. If you don't save the project, next time it will come on again.
