Mackie Onyx and firewire option

Hey people! I think i'm gonna buy a mackie onyx 1620 with a firewire option. Is there anyone out there who has one? What do you think about the firewire card regarding sound quality and latency? Is it alright?

I have two Onyx mixers, both with firewire cards. They work fine. The sound is clean and fine. Its not up to what an extremely high end interface can produce, but it gives fine results for the price. The Onyx preamps are wonderful. The only limiting factor is that the firewire signals come *right* after the preamps, before the channel inserts or EQ. All that you get is the preamps. This is great for a pure tone, but liimits your flexibility.

Not on the way into the computer via the firewire connection.

    That really sucks.

It seems to me that by design it would not be all that tough to put the A/D after the insert /direct out points. If this is the case I think Makie really dropped the ball on that.

Yah. This design decision is the one that Mackie has been hammered on the most. Their reasoning was that they were making a "live" sound mixer that had the ability to record shows through firewire. They wanted you to be able to apply affects, mute, solo, EQ, etc. without affecting the recording.

The newest Onxy boards (the big ones -- 24-56 channels) have a mod inside so you can change the direct outs from pre eq to post eq, but the smaller boards don't have any option right now. I recognized that this can often be an issue for people doing studio recording, so that's why I mentioned it.

Is there any smart workaround for this? Can you group, or aux your way out of this problem? Or do just have to ride the mic REALLY good? hehe

The firewire interface gives you the input channels and the final stereo pair. If you are recording just one or two channels, you can use the main stereo outputs. Otherwise, you can loop the auxes or alt outputs back through another channel. You give up a channel, but you get a path -- but it runs through 2 preamp paths.
