monitor speakers for DTM

I currently use headphones for mixing and a small Sony CD player for testing the mix. I don't have the space or the money for good quality monitor speakers and a power amp. There are quite a few self powered speakers around, Edirol make a few models, 20,000 to 30,000 yen ($US300?), plus the usual suspects, Yamaha etc.

Does anyone own have any thoughts on these?

Thanks.
Brett

Whatever you do, don't buy the Alesis M1 Active Mk2 monitors.
They are cheap for a reason.

Really? Well their size 381mm high and 9kg would put me off.

These are quite reasonably priced ($US200?), probably a bit cheap considering they have a digital input. Maybe the analogue ones are better considering I alreay have an audio interface and mixer.

I know a lot of people who like the M-Audio BX-8 Monitors.

And I would recommend getting a monitor with an 8 inch driver.
6 inch drivers just don't represent the lower end accurately.

It's very simple really...for the most part you get what you pay for... there are no really great, really cheap monitors. Any speakers that sell for $300.00 per pair will have one deficiency or another. You will have to listen and decide which compromise you are prepared to make. Just remember that everything you do comes down to the monitors. I don't see the point of putting hours and hours into a mix when you know that you are not accurately hearing what you are doing...this will just lead to disappointment.

I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions. Good luck.

I was hoping to find something less than $300 but prices here vary a bit from US prices; and no bigger than 400mm x320mm (15"x12.5"). Those BX-8s seem good, I'll see what they sell for here. The size is at the upper limit (bit annoying they don't have sizes in metric as well, out with the calculator), and I'm a bit worried my tower desk is a bit top heavy (we had 3 earthquakes Wednesday night). As you can see from my atar bass is important to me!

nprime, the problem is I live in Tokyo. It's possible my entire apartment would fit into one of your rooms. I can't exactly leave my music unmixed. If I do get a recording contract of course I won't be mixing at al

    Thanks

I'm just saying don't be surprised if your mixes won't translate well to other systems, especially if your room is so small. You may almost be better off with the headphones.

    Tough situation.

I've got a pair of ATH-40fs which I have been using (which I love). But last weekends marathon effort was exhausting. I really need to be able to get the cans off.

I just found M-Audio BX-8 are around 30,000yen, about $US280 (under $200 would be nice). I think the biggest problem will be finding them.

    Brett

correction, I found BX5s, they have 5 1/4 speakers. BX-8 don't seem to be available here.
