Input gain & trim

Sorry if this has been asked before - did quite a long unfruitful search of forum - but I can't adjust analogue inputs using the track volume and trim.
Am I missing something here? I'm assuming that these two controls carry out the same function as the input gain and trim on an analogue mixer.
If they don't, what is their function, other than to send level to the MASTER in playback.
I use an RME Multiface with WinXP Pro SP2 and Sonar 3.1.1
Thanks in advance.

    Hello glenjan,

Input gain and trim work to control the volume if you are using input monitoring, or the volume for playing back a track that has already been recorded - they do not affect the volume at which a signal is recorded.

You control the volume at which the signal is recorded by any combination of the following:

    1. Adjusting the volume at the preamp or desk into which the lead or microphone is connecetd.
    2. Adjusting the gain control on an outboard compressor (if using one before the signal comes into the computer)
    3. Using the controls for your soundcard's software.

You can read more about this and how it's done on pages 175 to 176 of the S4 manual.

Thanks for your reply. I'm using an RME Multiface a mackie 1402 for the pre-amps. However, I'm taking an SPDIF signal directly from my Yamaha Motif rack and the level is too low. I'd like to avoid the DA / AD thing if I could, but there is no way to increase the gain of the SP DIF signal.
