educational versions of software?

Hi,
Is their a difference between educational versions of software and the commercial version? The reason I ask is I just bought an educational version of Reason 3.0 and am now worried that it will not be fully functional. I did this because since I am a student I can get it for 199.99 instead of 400.00 to 450.00 dollars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave

Some of the educational software out there does not have a upgrade path. Which means if you want to move to the next version and you are no longer a student or educator. You will pay full price...............................JDW

    Thanks johndale,
I am ok with the upgrade issue I just hope that I will have everything that the commercial version has. I can deal with having to pay for the full upgrade in a few years after all I am still paying ½ of the full price now and now is when that extra 200.00 for things like rent, food, and the #1 necessity beer.

In a free market, each software company can choose for themselves what they do with educational software. Among the strategies I have seen are:

    1) Crippleware, the educational version is less functional.
    2) Expireware, the educational version will cripple when the next version is released.
    3) Pastware, the educational version has no future, cannot be upgraded and maybe cannot be patched with updates.
    4) Hobbyware, the educational version may not be used for any commercial enterprise - even after graduation or to help finance the ongoing education.
    5) Costware, the educational version can be upgraded to a non educational version for a price.
    6) Software, the educational version costs less but is in every respect the exact same software package as the full version.

I think it would be cool to create a list of what software falls into which categories.

I bought Reason 2.0 academic a while back and there's no difference. I don't think its even on file or noted anywhere that my registration is a student copy. The .5 upgrades are free for everyone. However, there is no academic pricing for the 2.5 to 3.0 upgrade, so I imagine that when 4.0 comes around, you'll be paying the full $130 for the upgrade like everyone else.

Actually, as I just discovered today, there IS academic pricing for the upgrade to Reason 3.0. It bummed me out, too, since I already paid full price ($130) for my upgrade a couple of months ago.

Go to academicsuperstore.com, and search for Reason. You will see the Reason 3.0 upgrade for 70 bucks. Not bad. I won't save, but hopefully some of you guys will.

WTF!! That's where I buy most my software too. (Though I didn't buy 3.0 from there this time). So lame. I guess it takes a while for academic versions to come out.
