Editing bass loops

In GTP3, is it possible to change the pitch of a bass loop note by note as opposed to measure to measure? How?

the only way you can change pitch on a bass loop (note by note) is if you had each individual note available to edit (much like you would arrange a drum track using "one hits") Otherwise you can only change the key of the entire loop.

    two ways to do this

1: you have access to a disk/collection of loops that offers individual bass notes. (they do exist) you would get each note to the pitch you want it (or hopefully the collection has each note along a fret board available) then arrange them into a measure accordingly (zoom in on a measure and place notes where you want them) and then loop that measure. I guess the main problem would be that the loop would probably sound pretty disingenuine, unless you really spent time trying to find those little things that make it sound authentic i.e. slides, hammers, or even slaps.

2: you take a pre-existing bass loop. place it into a measure and zoom way in on it. you could then highlight the individual notes occuring within that loop and cut them out (identifying the notes by looking at the actual wave form), you could then edit each note and get it to the pitch you want, then arrange as described above. again I imagine the resulting loop might not soumd that great unless you spend a lot of time working on it to get those little particulars in there.

otherwise, go to the local pawn shop and offer 50 bucks for that used Squier in the window. (easier said than done)

OR, maybe you could play desired bass line on your git, loop it and edit that loop to sound like a bass by lowering the pitch in the properties menu? don't know if you could actually do this though; just thought of it.

so far, she doesn't seem to be getting used to it, I guess they never do, huh?

Actually, this is the way I do bass on ALL my recordings. It's not the best bass sound, I know. But all I am trying to do is give some bottom to the recording. It actually doesn't sound that bad if you keep it simple.

    Someday I'll buy that Squier

Good suggestion about using the guitar as a bass. Going to give it a try...

Gave it a quick try. It actually works pretty well! Fiddle around with the amp/cab models in Amplitude and you can make it sound pretty good!

    Hi Guys!
I was not able to find the "properties" where you can lower the pitch.. can you give me some directions? That's exactly what I am needin'

By the way southphilly, I went to the local shop for that bass.. and they had a used squire at the window ahahaha I swear! but it was in pretty bad shape, think I preffer waiting a bit more and buy something more decent... maybe a NEW squire

    See ya!

Convert the clip to a smart loop first. Then right click it and select propererties. I'm not on the computer that has GTP3 but if I remember, you can then step down the pitch 12 steps, or an octave, to make it sound like a bass. Add Amplitude and EQ and it doesn't sound too bad!

You don't really have to convert it into a loop to use this feature. I just play the bass line on my guitar through the entire recording. Then change the pitch through the FX option - down 12 steps.

I also touch it up with some EQing - the raw sound can be a little off.

But if what you are after is a loop, then I guess that would work, too.

Which effect do you use to step it down?

It's called <Pitch Shifter> It's under the Cakewalk effects. You can either apply it to the whole track (which is what I do for the bass track), or you can select a portion of the track and apply it note by note.

    Hope this helps,

    Rick,

I don't see Pitch Shifter under Cakewalk if I right click the effects bin. Are you using GTP3?

    Yes, I am using GTP3. Here is the path I use: <right click> <audio effects> <cakewalk> <pitch shifter>

I'm not sure why yours wouldn't have that... anyone else?

    hey RW

sure it's not a plugin you downloaded? I've got no pitchshifter either.

No, I don't even know how to download plugins

The only thing I can think of... I have Cakewalk MusicCreator loaded on my PC (I used this before I got GTP3) and it has Pitch Shifter. Could GTP3 be smart enough to go out and get it from the other program?

I don't know... does Cakewalk sell these things separately?

The tip about adding Amplitube to a bass loop really made alot of difference.

Cheers for that (whoever it was)

yeah, defintely from Music Creator since it's a VST and probably in the same folder. when you installed GTP3 it ran the intial adapter and picked up "pitchshifter" because folder is "shared plugins" for all CW apps.
