A mixing Issue

I'm not that great at mixing, when i'm done with the recording process, and I was wondering if anyone knows of some good mixing tips and tricks, or just stuff on how to mix properly, and to not have it sound all clustered and stuff like that, if they can let me know about it. For example how loud should the drums be?, how loud should the guitars be?, The bass, etc...etc...etc... I if helps any, me and my friend like to record Hard Rock, Metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, stuff like that.)

Thanks Eric,

Check out my song and but it if you like it! http://itunes.apple.com/u...ure-single/id434903136

Listen to a CD of one of these groups before you mix to "tune" your ears to that style of mix, and then, try to match levels with them. Pan the guitars wide, put bass and kick near the center (11 o'clock and 1 o'clock), lead vocal in the center, and backup vocals split left and right. Try this as a starting point, but don't be afraid to experiment. Most importantly, use and trust your ears. If this doesn't work for you, then there are a ton of books and articles on mixing. However, all the self-help articles in the world can't replace experience which you can only get from doing it. Good luck.

I had a hard rock group in once and they wanted to do the mixing. At the end every instrument volume was as high as possible, leaving no dynamics or seperation to the mix and song. As you can imagine the final mix sucked.
The point is; set your levels at a moderate volume and focus on re-creating the performance. Give the song some life and breathing room. Let the mastering engineer do the rest.
