practical analog I/O channel count limits

My current daw (Athlon 1.4, win98SE, Sonar 2XL, Gadget Labs Wave 4) is ancient but has been too reliable and capable to warrant replacement. Until now?

I just ordered a new notebook computer (Toshiba P4 3.3G, 2G memory, XPpro etc) and want to see if I can set up a portable multitrack recorder with it.
I just ordered a upgrade to Sonar 4 Producer edition.
I am planning on getting a firewire I/O box of some sort.
Does anyone have some insights on how many channels you can simultaneously record on a single firewire port? For example, can I daisy chain 3 analog 8-I/O boxes via firewire and get reliable performance?

I have been out of touch with computer recording gear for a while and welcome any suggestions for using a notebook as a portable DAW.

Thanks,
mike

I have a Toshiba widescreen 3.2 GHz laptop that I (oddly enough) use as my kitchen PC. In my experience doing DV editing the onboard hard drive was useless. I ended up getting an external 250 GB 7200 RPM Maxtor firewire drive for the video data.
