how to get rid of the hiss

So i'm recording on my laptop with my m-audio podcast and i've gotten everything figured out now except the only problem is that i get a really loud hiss whenever i record or play it back. when i record in stereo, the first channel is a stream of a thick line, showing the hiss, and the second channel is my guitar which is normal.

anybody know how to fix this?

there's no crazy electronics going on around me and i also have no programs opened while i record.

anything?

Umm...don't record in stereo. Turn the hiss channel off, record, pan the guitar to where you want it to sit in the mix.

The most likely problem is you don't have a cable that carries a stereo signal.

Especially since it's not likely your guitar has stereo output. Unless you're running it thru something that will give it a stereo output - guitars are MONO. Thus the cause of your problem. The other channel you're just recording noise.

NO! I didn't mean it that way, Jeff!!!! In fact, I thought that was kind of what you were saying, but I was just making it clearer!

    I certainly don't think you're a dumb anything!!!

well, that's not really the best solution.

go to your track properties with the I/O tab clicked at the bottom and on the track you are recording on, click on the little "I" and pull down the menu. you should have at least 3 entries to choose from, instead of choosing the one with STEREO in the name, choose the one with the "L" or "LEFT" in the name.
