First songs recorded and edited in Sonar 3.0

Hey all,
I wanted to post my first songs in which I used Sonar 3.0. Before Sonar I was recording via a Korg D1600. The korg is a great unit, but the computer is just the way to go. The songs are entitled: October and Thanksgiving Jam. I would love some feedback especially regarding production and mixing. Thanks in advance.

Wow, excellent guitar playing. I'm listening to Thanksgiving Jam, great song. On the mixing, the drums are sitting up front too much, and they detract from the guitar. October is another wonderful song. You are obviously a very accomplished guitarist! On October, everything is "bunched" up. It needs to be "spread" out a bit, and again the drums are sitting too far up front. Perhaps panning the rhythm guitar over one way or the other, and leave the lead in the middle. All in all, a little practice with the mixing, and I think we are going to have another forum superstar!

    Mitch,
I listened to almost all of the songs you had on Songramp and have to agree, you play some mean guitar dude. Sounds like you need to flesh some of this stuff out, add vox etc.
Other than than that, like all of us you are presented with so many choices in S3P, it becomes one gigantic learning curve. Keep postin'.....we'll keep listening.

Thanks for all of your kind words. I look foreward to posting new music for you all as well as listening to what you all have to offer. I'm generally amazed to hear the talent on these chat sites. Ususally the artists here are more accomplished and talented than 90% of the crap they push on us over the radio.....As for my song Thanksgiving Jam, the solo was recorded with a PRS Cu24 (stock pups in the Bass position) through my Line 6 AX212. The patch was a general "Fender Twin" type tone with a random overdrive stomp box (simulated in the amp). The amp was mic'd with a Rode NT-1 about 3 inches from one of the speakers pointed just to the left. The mic was fed into my FW410 sound card and into Sonar. Very simple setup actually. If you have any more questions I'll be more than happy to answer.
    Thanks,
    Mitch

One more thing, Contrahell. I totally agree that some of my tunes scream for vox. I'm not very good at lyrics however. If anyone would like to write some lyrics to my tunes, please take a stab at it. I'd love to put them on my tracks with full songwriting credit to the lyricist, of course.

I listened to "October". Very good playing, and the mixing was very clean and clear.

For my taste the lead guitar sounded a bit "distant" - maybe a wee bit less reverb?

Otherwise no major comments. It might be cool to vary the arrangement/instrumentation a bit more throughout the track - build it up and break it down a bit?

What about a middle section with a different guitar sound, e.g. clean, to bring a different "voice" in to play?

    Good stuff.

    Cheers

I also listened to about half the song you have listed on that site. And you're guitar playing is well passed anything I can do. I noticed that at times the mix seems to really favor particular instruments....on the Am7 groove the solo might have been a little too upfront. The foundation and punch of this song seems to get lost under that solo....(great solo by the way). I think I would bring that solo down just a touch..... Also perhaps more of a fade at the end.

Overall...some great playing here. I would just work on making sure your mixes dont crowd together.

    Hey Mitch,

Listening to October as I write... Great guitar chops my friend! Great tone, how is it recorded? Also really like how the acoustic sits in the mix. I always have difficulty getting the acoustic to sit just right, you've accomplished it real well. The mix is nice a clear, not really much negative to say.

Really nice feel on Thanksgiving Jam II.
I really like this kind of smooth jazz feel! With this genre, have you considered a more hollow body jazz tone for the lead? You've certainly got the chops to get rid of the distortion. Maybe 2 lead parts... one just as it is and a second with the clean tone.

Enjoyed both of these, I'll have to check the others when I have a chance.

    Thanks,
    Toby

    Wow,
How did this thread come up? It's almost exactly 1 year old!!! Very cool of you guys to search for this and comment. I'm certainly appreciative of the listens and the great feedback. These songs were recorded over a year ago and my skills as a novice home studio engineer have improved exponentially since. Anyway, October was recorded with my ovation, mic'd with a Rode NT-1 into a FW410. The electrics were recorded with my PRS Cu24 through a Line 6 AX2212 and mic'd with the same Rode. Same thing with Thanksgiving Jam. Toby, you are right, a hollowbody would do much justice to this song, but I didn't have one until July (a gift from my wife). One day I may go back and re-record with the PRS HBII, but I don't like going back and re-recording my solos since they are improvised at the time of the recording and I feel that I may miss the spontinaety of it. Rolo, I still love Progresso and Water....
