Delay in audio playback when recording

I'm having trouble with recording. There seems to be a short but consistent delay between the time when I speak into the microphone and when that sound is played back either through my speakers or through my headphones. It makes it nearly impossible to do multi-track recording. And it's very difficult to do even single track recordings. Any suggestions on what is going on here?

Did you search this forum. There are at least weekly threads about this issue. Search for Latency - Delay -

The problem you're having is a latency issue. There are tons of posts related to that. Also check out the F1 help files (search "latency"). I'm not trying to avoid giving you specifics but I've not dealt with Sound Blaster cards so I can't walk you through the steps to compensate for your latency problem.

I uninstalled everytning related to Soundblaster.

Rebooted. Then I went back to the original SB disk

I got when I bought the card and loadd th software. Latency continued but was better and a nasty sound occurred during playback.

I went to the SB web siter and downloaded the updated drivers from Nov '03. I loaded them and the nasty sound went away and the latency was much diminished.

I went back to the SB web site and downloaded the driver update from Nov '04. I loaded them and the latency issue nearly disappeared.

I went back to the SB site and downloaded the application update for the Surroundaound mixer that came with the original SW. Everything is totally cool now.

Lesson learned - Sometimes you have to erase the board and start over again. Following the correct sequence of SW updates is very important.

Thanks to everyone for their support
