The little keyboard in the Windows system tray indicates whether MIDI is being sent and received.

By "monitor" do you mean hearing audio? Please tell us what you're trying to do, and how you are trying to do it.

I was assuming he was looking for something akin to a "packet sniffer", which would let you view MIDI events as they travel through the ports. It could be useful for debugging control setups.

If that's what you're after, then you can always just set a track to record "MIDI Omni", then move various controls, recording the MIDI data in the track. Then stop recording, and look at event view. Kind of clunky, but it will let you figure out things like "Oh, that knob is sending CC#16, and it's sending values in a range of 0 to 8192..."

Just wanted to see if HS was getting a midi signal from my controller. (It would be nice if it displayed more info, tho.) I have 3 other computers and a midi patch bay, so sometimes I forget where signals are going.

    Thanks again.

I suppose sometimes a pen & paper is still useful?

I'm still not sure what your original question was addressing...There is a "MIDI" activity icon in HS...If you have "blinking" lights when you're playing, then you have MIDI data being sent...

Why are you running three computers? You may have a "networking" problem...You might consider operating your DAW with only one computer and using a secondary or "external" drive if you're concerned abut efficiency...

I have no networking problem. I have more notes laying around here than I can shake a stick at. This is a studio that has evolved over the last 20 years.

I only use the PC occationally because that's what all my students have.

I needed a set up on windows that so I could relate to them. One of my former students is a tech support rep at Cakewalk so I went with HS.

Thanks so much for your help. It's been a real time saver. If I'd put the extra time into practicing the piano over the last few decades that I put into trouble shooting and learning software etc. I might have ended up being some one you people would have known about. <g>
