I love this piece. The organ and brass is great. The guitar burns.

Right in the pocket.

Not really anything to complain about here. Extremely well executed and interesting feel - took me a bit to "get it" in the A sections. The whole "horn section" thing sounds great, tones and mix are good...blah blah blah...It just sounds good.

I even think the drums sound good - though if you were to find someone as well versed in this style on drums to round this out (which is not me ), it'd be even more "something" than it already is.

Fantastic job.

Doh! I was mixing one tonight and got behind, huh? Let's see. . .

jmarkham
Yea, it's a Hammond XK-3 .. which has 3 tonewheel sets, and real tubes ...
it's just a really cool unit and at least 150lbs lighter than a B3 (even
the "portable" one they came up with). Even has the old 11 pin
leslie port ;-)

Yeah, and it sounds pretty dang good, too! (I think it's the 11-pin leslie port.) Thanks for playing on it, man!

Abbey - Hi, Jeff! Thanks for having a listen. I appreciate the compliments. You're about due to post another of those DiMeola-inspired pieces, aren't you?

esummers - Thanks, Ed. Thanks for checking it out.

jimrocks22 -
M rocks, he does Jazz, even Colabs.

Uh-oh! Now I'm going to become Mrocks23 or something! Thanks, man. Take a jazz break, will you?

chaz - emailed you, chaz!

Telecaster -
Why dont you guys make a complete CD, I know I would buy it.

All right, Telecaster! That's one! 999,999 more and we're platinum! Thanks for listening and commenting. You flatter us, but we kinda like that!

Marko - Thanks, Marko. I appreciate you having a listen.

Blades - Thanks, Blades! Check out some Garibaldi stuff. The 2 bar pattern in the A section is a Garibaldi groove that he plays in spots on their (TOP's) latest CD. That was part of the motivation for this piece. Cool stuff.

As a charter member of the proverbial TOP fan club (playing their stuff live as far back as 1974) I give this thumbs up. (I saw Chester Thompson do Squib Cakes live in 1976 - I still can't comprehend the experience.)

What makes this for me is the rhythm section. The bass playing is pretty close to Rocco style and the funky backbone is well done. Most folks think horns when you you think TOP, but it's Rocco, Roger, David G., and Jeff T. that set up the funk. And, of course, the horns. Yea... the horns.

Great job.

Wow, this one is great. Horn Section was great, who did the barry sax part or was that a tenor just down low? Nice programming on the drums also. And very nice chops on the organ. Was that recorded with a real leslie instereo? Guitar work was great too. This whole thing was excellent.

kfischer - I'm right there with you, kf! Yeah, Garibaldi and Prestia are in a league of their own in the groove department. They're still doing it, too. Great stuff. Thanks for having a listen, too!

den121961 - Charley Langer (hornplayer) performed the horn section. He played the alto and tenor parts on alto (the tenor part gets very low for alto!) and the trumpet parts on wind-controller/synth thing that he has (Charley would have to provide the details - I always forget which gear it is). The trumpets sounds are decent with this, no? But, we didn't really have the bari covered. I ended up combining a sample sound that Charley had with one that I have, but the bari is the least convincing sound, overall. Next time, I would write specifically for what Charley can emulate (2 trumpet, 2 alto, and trombone, maybe), I think, if we didn't have other players.

Hey, aren't you a trumpet player? I think we exchanged an email or two a while back? Would you be up for some collaboration? (Do you play flugelhorn, too, btw?)

Jeff Markham (jmarkham) performed the organ fills and solo on top of a MIDI bed that I provided. The whole bit is done on a Hammond XK-3. Jeff talks about it earlier in this thread. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Thanks for checking it out, Dennis!

The trumpets started out as wind controller patches for the Kurzweil 2500 from Patchman. I've modified them a bit. These particular patches just use the Kurzweil ROM, which I think sounds pretty good. To get the trumpet unisons, I played them separately and added very small amounts of "random" pitch bends so that they wouldn't phase. I also went to some lengths to make them sound like they were really working to get the high notes. For example I made them play a bit sharp and accentuated the higher freqs by automating some EQ. And, while I tried to play the 16th triplet runs cleanly, I didn't go in and fix little inaccuracies.

I agree with Mark on the bari, although I think I liked my bari sound a bit more than he did. The bari sax that I originally gave Mark (also a tweaked Patchman wind controller patch that uses the Kurzweil ROM) sounds pretty good on more traditional sax section kind of stuff, but it doesn't really have the bite that Mark wanted on this tune. So, I think he layered his on top of mine. Sad to say, I don't own a bari or tenor. I just haven't been asked for those enough to justify spending the major bucks required to get the quality of instruments I would need to avoid insanity.

Glad you liked the tune, Dennis!

the guitar run at 3:12-3:13 lags. Please re-do and post again.

great stuff all of you. I can't imagine being able to play that fast. I can't even listen that fast.

but it doesn't really have the bite that Mark wanted on this tune.

Eqing could probably have done the job quite nicely.

thanks for the info on how you did it. Actually, M, yep, I'm a trumpet player and we talked before. And those trumpets fooled me, I didn't notice they weren't real. I just did a tune where I needed a bari sax, and couln'd find someone to play it. I ended up using my sound canvas, since it was a small part, but plan on going back and adding the real thing once I find someone to do it. Nothing barks like a real barry does. Thanks for the info guys.

hornplayer - Aaah, thanks for the additional detail, Charley! I knew you put a lot of work into it, but random pitch bends and automated EQ? Wow! You're something, brother!

michael japan - Dang guitarists! Thanks for checking in, Michael. Hope you're doing well.

chaz - Doh! There's that EQ thing again! Thanks for the time on the 'phone the other night. Interesting discussion. I appreciated it!

Boogie - Hey, thanks, man! I know my offerings aren't exactly in the mainstream to the majority on the forum, but, hopefully they're not *too* inaccessible! Thanks for having a listen and for the compliment.

den121961 - Hey, I see you have a dueling hammonds tune out there! I'll check it out shortly, Dennis!

M- I did up a lil drum groove...then I put some bass down [Rocco Prestia is a GOD] I love TOP [fav albums are Bump City, Drop it in the Slot, Urban and self titled release from 73 i think it is]

Anyways so I did this lil piece [drums and bass]..it seemed a lil flat just drums and bass so I couldn't resist displaying my total lack of skill as a keyboard player and horn player because lets face it we all know the real sounds of organ and horns come from the late 1990's Korg X5 keyboards.. apologies for the terrible noodling...Kids, this is what happens when you start something with absolutely no structure...I'm basically a bass player and would love to jam on somethin funky with you guys & I understand if no horn or keyboard players want to have anything to do with me :D hahaha
