How To Select AMD Athlon CPU

I need another computer for home. My experience has been only with Intel processors. I currently have a P4 at 2.8 Ghz, FSB 800MHz, with 1 MB or RAM. How do choose an Athon that is equivilent or better than the P4 systhem mentioned above?

I think I want to try the Athlon since they may be less expenxive than the Intel P4s for the same amount of performance.

    Look for motherboard and CPU solutions with the Athlon 64 939 form factor.

    I think I'm correct in suggesting stay away from the Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra PCI express chipsets for the time being
    If i've got the wrong end of the stick, then feel free to correct me (it happens most times anyway!)
