Dual Core Athlon 64 vs. Dual Opteron Rig?

I am curious to know how much real world performance one gains (if any) from building, or having built for them, a Dual Opteron DAW vs. a Dual Core Athlon 64 based DAW?

Will I gain anything besides more space in my wallet?

I am hoping to get some responses from some people experienced with both systems. I am looking into a new DAW and don't want to sepnd ~2x the price and get that giant motherboard/case if I don't need too.

Thanks in advance,

-Sean

    HI Sean,
    you can look here~

    www.adkproaudio.com/benchmarks.cfm

the dual core (both Intel and AMD) outperform thier respective dual processor counterparts, and cost less.

    2 things to consider however.

will you be adding multiple Audio interfaces (EG 2 RME madi cards, 2 multifaces, 3 lynx AES cards) along with DSP cards? you would be better
with a real dual cpu system. more PCI buss' vs a single system with a single PCI buss.

plus the dual opteron will stay in your studio longer, and at a later date you can upgrade the single core to dual core dual opterons (4 cpus)

From experience... I had a Dual Opteron 246 system and was having a lot of problems with it. My new system (below) blows it away. Dual core (in my opinion) is the way to go.

bummer ~ we find they are extreemly stable, never an issue.

the 4800 wont blow it away but it will slightly outperform it in many areas. aside from high track count.

i suspect the issue you had was UADs?
difficult to set up without the High host loads with the UADs.

    you did save about $1000.

    killer rig

Yes, where it does blow it away is with respect to the UAD-1's. The UAD-1's are capable of running more plugs with less load on the the system cpu... Although I am having a problem with crackles and pops on the right channel only when exporting audio. If I raise the soundcard latency to 1024, or lower it to 128 it works, but more useable settings like 256 and 512 gives me the crackles on export.
