L->R Sidechain Trick

Hi everybody!

I'm not sure if I'm doing L->R Sidechain Trick right (I'm using crunchessor). I hard pan Kick to the left and bass to the right. I route both tracks to a stereo aux bus. I insert crunchessor, slapping bass preset, set the plugin to stereo and choose sidechain SC:R. Then I send this bus to another bus and I set the mono/stereo button to mono.

Is this process ok? Which compressor settings are right for sidechaining? Fast attack and release, but how much compression?

    Hey Evan,

    You're working too hard! Use the db audioware - db-D dynamics processor which has a sidechain feature builtin.

    The unique side chain feature (which requires a multi track application like Cubase or Cakewalk) lets you perform tricks like ducking and synchronized gating, normally only possible with external hardware.

    Regards,
    David

    haven't gotten Crunchessor sidechain to work in Sonar myself...which is a shame, since I loved using it in Cubase.

    But if you do figure out a way, please post and let us know.

    Thanks dcastle and psi777;

    I tried db audioware's demo but I think it distorts the bass too much when you set a fast attack. I think it is quite difficult to find a software compressor that can deal with fast attacks and basses. I find Crunchessor to sound better because has some kind of upsampling feature when you press a high quality button.

    I've been testing the process I described before and I think it works (it is not new). Nevertheless, I must be doing something wrong because two reasons;

    1 When I route bass and kick to the first bus (no plugins inserted yet) I've got an increase in bass and kick volume and I don't know why. All faders are set to zero. Perhaps it has something to do with hard panning and sonar panning law (my setting is sin/cos taper, constant power), but I don't know.

    2 I can hear bass and kick pumping as a result of the volume increase and crunchessor's slapping bass preset, but the plug-in compress the bass so smoth that I can't say if there is sidechain or not.
