Explorer.exe Spiking my CPU Usage

I just did a fresh install on my computer and I have a concern. Sonar CPU meter shows steady CPU usage around 30% in one of my projects. This is just while I am not doing anything...just watching. I will see a spike up to 80% on the CPU. Looking in the task manager, it appears that explorer.exe is doing something about every 5 seconds. Anyone have a clue? Is there something that windows is doing every few seconds? Is there a way to turn it off?
