Need Processor/MoBO recommendation

Hi gang!
New kid on the block here. I'm running Sonar PE 4.03 on an Averatec 6130 laptop. I bought it because it has a P3.0 processor. But I'm struggling to get quality performance when running plug-ins. I believe that there are issues with the on-board video. But, I digress......

I'm going back to a desktop! I'm considering building it to optimize for audio. I need your expert recommendations for a good Sonar-friendly motherboard/processor. I'm not real interested in 64 bit or dual processors. I'd like be able to run Sonar, Sampletank II, Groove agent, Z3Ta, and assorted other soft synths as well as processors without any glitches.

Thanks for all advice!

    Check out http://www.carillondirect.com/clnweb/index.jsp?country=UK
and see what they use in their DAWs.
I built mine using many of the same parts they do, and I've never had a problem, performs beautifully......

    A64 939 4000+ with an L2 cache of 1 mb on an MSI Neo-Platinum 2.

If you want performance for softsynths and plugins then 64bit is the way,
    especially with the 1mb L2.

Seconded (Though I got the Gigabyte Ultra K8NS- Ultra 939 Board)

With ram prices low now, I'd go with 2GB. In fact, I recently built a new machine, and had a strict budget to work with, so went with 2GB of ram over the 1MB L2 cache (I think the extra ram will give more of a quantifiable boost in performance, than the L2). Still, in 6mos or a year, I expect to upgrade to a dual-core (1 MB L2 cache) chip, which is the beauty of the 64 bit 939 systems - very upgradeable with just a chip swap.

What apps are you running? I assume that you are running Sonar. Which version? Also, what plugins do you run? What is latency for realtime play of softsynths?

    Thanks,

I'm running Sonar 4 and with Spectrasonics plugins at 7ms with the EMU and 2ms with the Juli@. It's a very robust setup for softsynths.

    Sonar 4.02

    EWQLSOGold.
4 fully loaded instances with medium sized instruments.
1.5 on the latency. WDM drivers.
    No frozen synths yet.
The 5th instance of Gold or StormDrum will force the latency to be moved up to 2.9.

Lots of info regarding building a DAW with an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 motherboard in THIS THREAD.
