MIDI Velocity Truncation (quieting the loud beats)

This happens to me all the time:

My MIDI hi-hat patterns sound fine except everyone once in a while there's a loud beat. Ditto for kick drums, snare, whatever. Sometimes if the velocity is more than, say, 64, the sample is radically different from what it sounds like at 63.

So, I often want to apply a ceiling to MIDI velocities in a track (without changing quieter notes).

Examples:
1) don't allow any hi-hats to go above 64
2) don't allow any kicks to go above 100

To generalize:
- don't allow anything in track N to go above velocity X

What are some ways to do this?

a) The brute force approach is to manually lower the velocities of all the loud beats (using the Piano Roll). This is fine for short loops and songs, but not for long jams; it gets too tedious and error-prone.

b) I tried Process/Interpolate the other day. It worked, but I wish I didn't have to type in so many numbers.

I was wondering if there's a CAL script that lets me select a note and use its velocity as the ceiling for the track.

Are there other ways to apply a velocity ceiling to a track?

Thanks!

Go to Process > Midi Effects > Cakewalk FX > Velocity

Near the bottom of the box that comes up you can choose to limit the range of velocity of your midi track. (Make sure you have selected the data you want to process first).

    Hope this helps.

You could try Velocity Master - it's like a compressor / expander for midi. You'd need to keep each of the drum instruments on separate tracks (kick v. snare) to get the level of control you're looking for. Not bad for $30.
