Recording auotamtion and notes

I use G-1000 (a keyboard) to play into Sonar and play back using the G-1000 as a sound module.

Now I want to control the volume of the organ while I play. I've told Sonar to use wheel data on the volume-parameter and that works fine. But how can I record automation data AND the notes I play on the keyboard simultaniously?

Love,
Rolf

Which automation data? MIDI? Just use any MIDI controller (slider, knob, whatever) for e.g. filter or FX manipulation on your keyboard - if it sends MIDI, Sonar will record it. You can also first record notes, then controllers.

    Thanks LoopJunkie.

    Yes, MIDI on a MIDI-track. I'm making a GS MIDI-files for the Roland SC88Pro.

I want to automate the track volume (and the later on assign the envelope to expression). I've set the track-volumes "remote" to the pitchwheel on my keyboard, and it responds fine. When I arm the parameter the "Record automation" button on the transport is active and lets me record automation data with the wheel, but when I arm a track it grays out again. So, I can record automation OR record notes, not record automation AND record notes

Isn't there an easier way to do that? I feel more comfortable using MIDI directly: use any controller on your keyboard to send CC#7 (MIDI volume); you can record it directly with the MIDI track and not take a detour via remote automation.

I can do that on my Evoulution motherboard, but not with the G-1000 which is an old arranger-keyboard made for live stage use. I really love playing it because of the semi-wheighted keys.

I just can't understand why I can't do both. Should I consider this as a bug in Sonar?

    Synthesizer,

I don't beleive your problem is a sonar one, more likely your
G-1000 is not set to send the data, or it's sending on another
midi port (If I recall, it has more than one).

I don't know if there is another G-1000 user on the forum,
    is it made by Roland?

I haven't got one, but your best place to start is the keyboard
User manual, and perhaps Roland Technical support.

    Best of luck,
    Colin.

Thanks for your quick reply Colin!

Yes, G-1000 is an old Roland arranger-keyboard.

It works fine with my Evolution M149 keyboard. The volume-slider sends out CC#7 through its MIDI-output. With G-1000 it works differently: In the G-1000 the volume-slider controls the output volume of the output-sockets on the keyboard (which is connected to a amplifier). The G-1000 is basically to SC88pro's with an arranger and a lot of buttons and keys

    Here's the problem:

    - When I set the track volume to recieve data from the wheel it works fine. The volume goes to 64 (the middle position of the wheel) and goes up/down as I move the wheel from right to left.
    - When I hit arm the parameter for recording automation and hit the "Record automation" it records the incoming data and creates the volume-envelope.
    - When a arm a track for recording the "Record automation" on the transport gets grey meaning that I can't be pressed.

How do I arm a track for recording without disabling the "record automation"-button allowing me to record the keys on the keyboard and the wheel assigned to the volume at the same time?

    Love,
