record vocals while listing to the beat?

Hi

I wanted to record vocals while listening to a track. specifically i wanted to listen to the beat, but i guess it could theoretically be any audio track.

the problem i think is routing. i have a m audio duo to record the vocals, which is routed into my synthesizer, which is then routed into sonar as a midi track (i did this to put a filter on the vocals).

anyways, i have an m audio delta 24/96 as an audio driver. Is there any way to route an audio track so that i can hear it through headphones or speakers, without it recording when i record the vocals? right now when i press record, i am recording the L/R output of the Delta, but of course the beat is part of that output, so it gets recorded along with the vocals.

basically, i want to be able to hear an audio track, but not record its output. is this possible?

It's definitely possible but I'm a little confused. Not sure why you are recording the L/R output of the Delta. Shouldn't you be recording the input that the MIC is plugged into (i.e. Input One, etc)?

It sounds as if the h/w synth is outputting audio while you are recording vocals.

You need to record the beat audio seperately into Sonar as audio (not MIDI)

Then, when you record your vocals, the beat will go out the Master bus (headpones?) so that you can hear the beat and record/monitor vocals at the same time.

Steve is right here, I have the same problem with my setup also, so I record my midi to audio first and then record my analog instruments. Dont erase the midi track, just mute it, that way you can go back and make any changes later, which I often do. If there is a better way to this please let me know too, but this seems to work for me.

    Cheers
