question about ACPI

i've been going over various threads about ACPI and Standard mode in this forum and others, i had decided to heed the advice of SOS's martin walker and leave Xp in the default ACPi mode, my question is what potential problems to look out for in ACPI mode and how do i deal with them? thank you for your time.

The only problem I've had with ACPI is that my audigy 2 would click (with any application, playing any sound) and skip every so often. Swapping the card to another PCI slot fixed that.

Only if set to do so. There are settings in BIOS for power management to check, as well as in the Windows power control panel. For DAW use I generally disable all power management features, no screen saver, no monitor power down, no HDD spin down, no suspend.

    Edit: wait there's more...

Going to standard mode is only for troubleshooting and fixing obscure IRQ issues. Generally, Windows does a good job managing IRQ's and should be used in ACPI mode. Only go to standard mode if there's trouble and you need to manage your IRQ's manually.

You can stop that by right clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties. Then choose Screen Saver and at the bottom of the dialogue click on Power. Then set the three options to never for monitor, Harddrive and Standby; then click on hibernate and uncheck it and then click on Apply. Now your computer will not do those things.

Switching between the two isn't very fun... You have to re-install windows - I've done it before because I thought I had a problem with something.
