OT/Question about amt of HD space and comp. perf.

I have a 35 gig HD, with 40% unused. Years ago (not sure its still true) computer performance was adversely affected as the HD started to fill up. For example, when there was only, say, 10% free space, the computer would start to produce blue screens or otherwise mess up or slow down. My question is two fold: first, is this still true, and second, if it is, what percentage of free space should be maintained to ensure standard performance. Thank you.

Still should be true since you probably are using virtual memory in XP (virtual memory needs a pile of HD space). I don't know the specifics of where "things" might start failing since my disks have so much free space on them... I would guess that the only disk(s) that is (are) *required* to have empty space available is (are) the drive where the temporary files go and the drive where the paging file goes.

what percentage of free space should be maintained to ensure standard performance.

It's not a really valid question - just think about it: if there was a standard of e.g. 20% it would translate to 20 GB of a 100 GB disk and 100 GB on a 400 GB disk for the same applications mix. Doesn't make sense.

Disk performance is determined by access time to read and/or write a file - and it's the same if the disk is 10% full or 90%, has been tested with defragged drives in a lab. The faster the drive, the better the performance.
You also need space for paging, but that's determined by the amount of RAM you have. Then you need temp file space - determined by what you do on your drive: audio tracks need a lot of free space, each track of 44.1/16 bit needs 5.29 MB per minute. If you have 20 final tracks of 4 minutes in a project to mix, plus any amount of individual takes too good to throw away before mastering.... you can do the math ...
