.cwp files as documents?

Compared to most stuff, this one is far from urgent, but...

Does anyone know how to make a file - in this instance, the Cakewalk project files with a .cwp extension, but it could be any file - appear in the "Documents" sub-menu of the Windows Start menu?

The reason I ask is that I'd like to start up Sonar (4.0.3) with the last thing I was working on, but if I start the app it gives me a blank project, which I then have to close, and then select from the files menu the last piece I worked on. If I could simply select it from the documents menu, it would run Sonar with that piece, and I'd be starting my workflow.

Not really a Sonar-specific question, but you people are so smart around here...

Cheers,
Envoy

If you want to start Sonar with the last thing you were working on the just open sonar choose File
    and type a 1.
In other words, look at the short list under File in Sonar.

I wish I knew how this happened, but after I posted I took a look again at the "Documents" tab. Sure enough, all the .cwp files are listed. I'd still like to know how to manually register a file type so that any file with that extension that gets created lands in the Documents menu, but I guess that can wait for another time!

You could always find the file in Windows Explorer and then right-drag to the Documents folder. From the menu, select 'copy shortcut' or 'create shortcut' or whatever appears with that meaning. It's an extra step, but you would have a link to your document.

    Envoy,

I am not at my DAW - am at work on a Windows 2000 machine. On this machine, the Documents sub-menu of the Windows Start Menu is showing me many different kinds of "documents." If .cwp files don't appear there, maybe this will help (this is for Windows 2000): Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Folder Options/ File Types. Look in the list. If .cwp is not listed, hit "new" button and add it.

Let me know whether this helps. Good luck!

Right, I know all that, as well as the shortcut by pressing "1" that the previous poster mentioned. What I was looking for was the way that Windows automatically tracks new or changed files with particular extensions and adds them to the Recent Documents menu. It works with many other apps, and I figured it should with Sonar. Oddly enough, though I'm sure I've looked before, it appears now that .cwp files *are* tracked, and I can quickly load the last file, and not also have a blank new document start up.

    Thanks,

Files only appear in the documents menu on the Start Menu if there is an action associated with the file type using the canonical OLE name "Open".

    You did ask...

I most certainly did, didn't I? But you hit the nail on the head: if the file type isn't registered, it wouldn't be noticed. I may try this with another app just to see, as I now have found the Sonar files *are* appearing correctly.

    Thanks!

It's not just registered though - there's an old trick I used back in the 95 days (and since) to stop txt files appearing in that menu. Delete the "Open" option for txt files in Explorer, then create a new, default option called "Edit" that runs exactly the same application (eg. notepad) as Open used to. Worked a treat.
