Stumbled upon a neat Midi editing trick!

I'm certain there have been posts on this before but I think this may be a different twist on extracting small midi clips from larger ones. It's quicker for me than the other methods and maybe you'll think so too.

Ok, suppose you have a single midi clip that stretches for say, 16 bars. Let's assume there is a 2 bar section starting at measure 9 that you would like to use as a loop elsewhere. If you just split the clip at measure 9 and 11, you will get a shorter clip but it will still contain all the notes (before and after the clips borders) of it's parent clip so it has to be processed further in order for it to become an autonomous, loopable clip. Here's my method: click on the clip at measure 9 and hit "S", then click on the beginning of measure 11 and hit "S" again. Click on the clip at measure 10 (or anywhere within the new clip's boundries for that matter) and hit "S" again. Lastly, hit "M". You now have a loopable midi clip that is independent of the larger clip it was extracted from. What do you think?

    Jo Mal,

Good catch I think Jardin Do Mar told me about it in the past. Anyhow, it also works for audio clips. Invaluable.

techead: thanks for doing the Wiki :)

crabtwins: using it on audio didn't even occur to me so now it's even cooler.

    I know "s" splits it
"w" rewinds it back to the begining

    what does "m" do?

what are some other short cuts? guess I should just read the manual....

M = Combine (but I prefer to think of it as Merge....M for Merge is easier to remember)

Don't bother, Sean, unless you've got 90 seconds to burn. Instead, go to Help/Keyboard Shortcuts, and there they are; listed by view (well, most of them, anyway. Some are undocumented). The best way that I've found to utilize them is to print out a copy and refer to it next to the DAW.

OK, that's a lie. I never printed them out; I just memorized them, and then used them until the mistakes slowed to a trickle. Regardless, a firm grasp of the shortcuts will speed up your workflow by at least 50%. Add MIDI Remote Control templates in Device Chains, and you'll actually go back in time ...
