microphone dont work- why?

i have kinetic. i am trying to record my own music. i have a brand new mic from radio shack. when i put together a beat and try to record the computer doest recod my voice, i've tried everything! does any one have advice?

    What software are you using to record from the mic? (Kinetic does not record audio).
