Frattoir Microhone Techniques

Any tips (anybody) on miking a frattoir? Got a job starting Monday which needs this. Never had to do it before. My instincts are to start trying with a dynamic (maybe SM57) at about 2 feet away, but anybody's experience would be gratefully appreciated. Thanx.

I would guess that it will be loud.

Sounds like a good starting point to me.

Probably just bleed all over everyone's mic unless tracked alone..

    Thanks Rod,

Sorry, I shouild have said ...

The frattoir will be recorded as an overdub, with the percussionist playing kick drum, frattoir and cymbal. Though mercifully he has only one pair of hands so won't be playing frattoir and cymbals at exactly the same moment.

Actually, I dig those kinds of sessions. Strange percussion instruments like that. Always fun. Usually never a problem from a miking perspective. Something like that - just sort of aim it in the general direction and you should be fine As long as the player can stand in one place and not move around

And I would agree with the 57. A good starting point. Considering how clangy and bright those things are, the 57 would be a good choice to tame the highs.

And uh duh - I didn't realize those things actually had a name (obviously not from the south and I apologize for that ). How do you pronounce it frat-wah? or something like that?

Yes, it's French - you're pretty close with Frat-Wah! Or maybe Fratt-Wuh. Depends on your accent I guess!

Jeez, I hope not. He'll be playing a kick drum and three cymbals at the same time!

Yeah ... better than using his feet! But seriously I've seen him in action. He just taps them rather than clonks them, if you see what I mean.
