Crazy Midi sync problem

I've just come across a new problem in SONAR; in songs that I've previously recorded, the audio all sounds great, and soft-synth generated tracks are timed perfectly (even though they have MIDI-based data triggering the samples) - but MIDI tracks that trigger external keyboards and synths suddenly have glaring timing issues. Tracks that are perfectly quantized are suddenly dancing around the beat as if they were recorded by someone with no concept of time or rhythm.

Before I go much further, are there specific settings I should check into?

I have:

SONAR 4 with all the latest updates
M-Audio MidiSport 8x8
2 Delta 66 soundcards (2nd card added recently)
Windows 2000 running on a Pentium 4 2.6ghz with 1.5 GB of RAM
FD Tranzport (just added recently)
Plenty of outboard gear, softsynths, Waves Platinum bundle, more

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Mark

    Hi Mark:
    You can to make a try:
    1- With Sonar closed, go to the Sonar folder, locate the TTSSeq.ini file and open it with the MS Notepad program;
    2- Under of the [Options] entry, if not present, insert a line with this command: IgnoreMidiInTimeStamps=1 and save the file;
    3- Open Sonar, load the same file you are having problems and verify if the problem was gone;
    4- If all is fine, you are right. If no, close Sonar, open the TTSSeq.ini file, delete the inserted entry and save newly the file;
    5- Post the result.
    I hope this work for you.
    Greetings.

    Thanks very much - I will try that when I get home to see if it helps.

    Mark,

    Is it possible to try running without the FD Tranzport?

    It could be that your midi timing is becoming erratic because
    of the increased data traffic over USB.

    Is there any possible coincidence with a change, or additional kit,
    with this problem?

    Regards,
    Colin.

    I will try that after I try the other suggestion. I had considered that possibility.

    What about the latency? Did that get turned up on accident?

    I don't think the latency got turned up. I tried the above suggestions, including removing the Tranzport from the MIDI setup, but it only improved marginally. I think SONAR is simply F***ed up. Something in the MIDI connections has gotten shot, and I think I'm going to need to reinstall, which is a major PIA - especially since this installation is only a little over a 2 months old.

    The latest "weirdness": when I solo a track - ANY track (midi or audio) - the program generates MIDI messages to port two, where I have a Roland JV1010 hooked up... I get a very low sustained piano note (possibly the bottom note) and a repeating pizzicato note on a very HIGH piano note (possibly the highest note). As soon as I un-solo the track, it stops. I solo it again, it repeats. I turn off the JV-1010, I can still see the midi activity on my interface. I disconnected all Midi inputs to make sure something wasn't generating some errant data, it persisted. It's gotta be the program, and it's infuriating.

    I didn't have ANY midi problems before I applied the most recent patch, but I don't know whether it's coincidence or not.

    Anyone seen behavior like this before?

    Maybe check your MIDI Sync options: Options->Project->Sync

    See "Latency is Killing Me".
    See B"Bye Bye SONAR".

    Also, are you using ASIO or WDM.

    There are some spec issues with ASIO and the midi timing. There is an offset in the options, audio, advanced tab where you can adjust how far forward or back should automatically be done for your card at your latency settings. This can vary. This and Juca's explaination above about midi In Timestamps together or seperately may correct your problem. (One is more for consistently off in on direction in time (offset), the other (timestamps) is for erratic midi note placement).

    I got a new card, switched to WDM drivers. I'm satisfied. I was previously using an M-Audio OmniStudio USB along with a midi 4x4 midisport. I am still using the midisport, but now with the Echo Layla 3G.

    Hope that helps some.

    Thanks, I'll try that.

    Nice to see another KG fan, BTW - I've heard your KG cover tune - mine's up there as well (Shadow Self) - I've been wanting to re-do it now that I have (ahem) "better" equipment (guess the jury's still out on that one).
