Overall performance P5 2 Help!
Hi all, I’m new to P-5, just installed it. I was hoping to be able to use it in my notebook just to get some ideas started with a small keyboard controller – but… The demo’s eat my 1.79 GHz AMD Athlon XP Mobile, and it’s going along at 45+ %. I’m limited to 480 MB RAM. My on board audio (Soundmax) is running MME, and is of course poor, but I was hoping it would just work anyway. I’m also showing no midi devices, but one is on the board (sound card.)? In Sonar, it will come up when I set the audio to MME, but not in P-5. How important is the audio interface as it relates to overall performance in P-5? I have my latency set at 200, and many simpler demo’s will play, but the CPU is running like heck. If I got a better audio card, would that help get the load off the CPU, or do I just not have enough of a system here to work with? Sonar works a lot better. Any help is appreciated, thanks. kellog

Ah, things are good. I was ready to dump this software - much more temperamental than Sonar, but after checking "Do not map through sound card," things are groovy and running in the 20%'s. Nice. My notebook is just not going to run "Taboo" period. All the rest of the samples are doing great. I'd still like to hear from the group as to what you are using for sound cards. My first choice would be Tascam US-122, but I'm hearing folks have problems with the drivers. I don't have fire-wire ports. I'd like a card like the 122 with the mic pre's - any suggestions? kellog

there are a bunch of USB 2.0 interfaces available. Check out musicians friend, you can sort by interface. Firewire is becoming the standard, though... if you have a PCMIA (or whatever it is) slot you could get a Firewire card for that.

Try freezing all the tracks on taboo and running it.

Thanks guys. I'm really looking for recommendations from P-5 users, and not trying to be lazy looking for audio cards. I just wanted to see what you were using. Didn't think about the PC cards. I read good things about Echo's, but there are no mic pre's. I'll have to get into the book for info on freezing tracks (I have no idea what that means.) As long as the others run, I'm happy - most of my projects will be smaller or around that size. Taboo just freaks my whole little PC out. I look forward to getting into P-5. This forum rocks. kellog

ORIGINAL: kellog Didn't think about the PC cards. I read good things about Echo's, but there are no mic pre's. My Echo Indigo died without warning - I won't be buying another one. I picked up an end-of-line Edirol UA-3FX for buttons that gave me I/O options I was missing with my output-only Indigo (it even prompted me to dig out the guitar!)

Yeah, I know, that's what I tell everybody else... But honestly, I haven’t had many problems loading a program and hitting play on a demo song until now. Not saying that’s a bad thing really, but it does make it a little harder for me to warm up to a program. Guess I’ve just been spoiled before. On with the books! kellog

Hi Kellog, and welcome to the forum, are you by any chance running Ver.2.01? I think the Cpu overhead is reduced quite a bit as opposed to 2.0. You can download it here (click this!) Also you might find some pointers for optomizing your P5 workflow here at the P5 wiki as well as at Project 5 dot com (just click the banner at the top of this page.) Good luck and let us know if you work it out. -MDK

I only have a 1.5ghz Centrino and can run it at 24-bit playback with 75% cpu hit using an Echo Indigo (running at around 50ms I think).

Hey, thanks for replies and welcome. Things are picking up. Both P-5 and Sonar 5 installs have been strangely buggy for me, but both have settled down well (almost seem like they are self healing). Freeze does indeed help my notebook out considerably. I still run fairly high CPU rates with Taboo – even with, (for test only), two gigs of RAM and a 3700+ San Diego chip, but I can do some more tweaking to the OS yet, and I’ve got some IRQ stacking with my main DAW. I really wanted P-5 for the notebook anyway, and it seems to be running fine now. This with the bottom of the line sound card. So now the hunt for a good card with good drivers… more work. Thanks to all, kellog
