Tape Saturation Emulation

i've read a lot about the warmth in tone that tape saturation in analog recording provides, and how a lot of it has been lost in digital recording. i've just recently started using sonar 4 PE, and was wondering about plug-in emulators of this analog effect. can anyone give me advice about good ones to use, and tips on implementation? is a nice one included in sonar 4 PE? any information i can get about this cool sounding effect would be very welcome.

There are tons of tube and analog warming plug ins out there. I use the Tape Sim plug in from Sonar 3 on bass with the low freq. boost engaged to add a lot of warmth and somewhat of an amp sound to a DI bass signal. I end up using it on just about every mix I do with a DI bass track that also didn't have an miked Bass amp. PSP makes a plug in called vintage warmer that is pretty decent. Antares Tube is ok as well. Voxengo I believe has a nice one too if I remember correctly.

Yeah the Voxengo TapeBuss is very convincing, its part of the AnalogFlux suite.

So this is more of a plug-in you'd put on specific audio tracks than a final mix?

It can be used on either. When used in the mastering chain it's usually recommended to place the tape sim before the limiter.

here's a big thumbs up for the PSP Vintage Warmer, which gets put across the 'backline' buss of every project I do. But be careful how far you turn that big knob, cos it can get pretty fuzzy.

And by this, you mean a bass and drum sub-mix, or something else?

Precisely. That's how I get those big fat rhythm sections.

"ips" is "inches per second" and it refers to the tape speed. Lower ips have lower fidelity.
