envelopes

i have an envelope on a track to control an effect's power on/off. the effect kicks in when the now marker gets to the "on" node, but when the now marker gets to the "off" node the effect does not turn off. i have each node set to "jump"

if i stop playback when the now marker is in the region of the off node (dotted line area) the effect turns off.

if i let the track loop so it starts before the "on" node and ends after the "off" node the effect will never the less stay on throughout the loop.

so, i can get the effect to turn on with the envelope , but i can't get it to turn off at the assigned time. what am i missing?

edit: i've been learning to use the envelope by applying the project 5 reverb. so, i tried applying other project 5 effects and the envelope works fine. anyone know how to cure the reverb "off" issue? i want to be able to use this reverb.

Could be a bug in the reverb. If it has a mix control, you might be able to use that instead - 100% dry would be the same as "off".

it has a proximity param, no mix.

but, this is moot since, as you know, saving a project with envelopes causes HS4 to crash when i try to open the project. this really sux. after spending the time now i have to learn some other automation.

    thx!

You could use volume or gain envelopes...

Instead of using the Jump mode for your nodes, try inserting a node just before and just after the current nodes and drag them both to -Inf. You can assign linear, slow or fast curve to the resulting line between nodes. It's possible to have a vertical line between two nodes.

Have you inserted the Reverb in the FX bin of the track or in an Aux Bus? I always insert reverbs in a Bus and use a Bus Send envelope to control reverb. In track view, you should be able to see the level of reverb being applied as the tune loops. If it doesn't drop to -Inf at the start of the loop, my solution should work.

You could use volume or gain envelopes...

    Just to clarify...

Since the reverb has no mix control, you can mimic one. Duplicate the track. Put the reverb on one copy of the track, but not the other. Then use a group to link the volume controls of the two tracks, and configure the group so one track is at max volume while the other is at 0 (and vice-versa). Then you can use a volume envelope in one of the tracks. As volume in one track goes up, the volume of the other track goes down - result is the same as a mix control.

    i tried that.

it's in the bin. i tend to use buses for groups, but that is a solution. this is supposed to work in the bin too. oh well...good thing there are choices.

    thx!

I prefer to insert reverb in a bus because it means there's only one instance of it running, thereby reducing CPU load. Also, each track can access the reverb by means of a Bus send envelope.
