I take it back: the track icons look really useful.

i made a sh!tty comment about the track icons a while back... looking again at the screenshot of the mixing console, they actually look like a freakin' great idea.

apologies extended.

I'm still wondering if the screen real estate is worth it. I hope you can scale them so they are tiny or somthing. If I had a 42" monitor with 4096 x 3072 resolution I "might" be able to fit every $#@!&* wiget software makers add to their product on the screen and still see it, but I don't. I do have problems finding the right track now and then but it only last a few seconds and it's over and I find the track by the text. If you use track icons they are on the screen all the time, not just the few seconds I need them to save me. I'm just not sure it will be worth it. I'll give them a try.

Oh, and we all want folks to think we use Apple Garage Band.. so let's put them up there..

As you may know Sonar Home Studio 4 already has Track Icons. At a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 on a 17" monitor, they remain permanently hidden in Track View. In Console View it's okay. There's the option to have small or large icons.

And in Sonar5 you can turn them off completely -- so its your choice. Good Job Cakewalk!

I was under the impression (and I don't even recall the source if in fact this is true) that we may have to converted a picture to the word to process the message, that icons actually add a step. Their strength being that they are universal rather the efficient.
    Anyone?

I haven't seen them in person yet (as I'm still on S3), but my feeling is the same as your original one. It seems cheap, steals real estate, and I don't really see the usefullness now that there are track folders. Want to see all your guitar tracks? Open up the "guitars" track folder, right? Other than that, it feels Logic wannabe.

I do give props to Cake for allowing us to turn them off if we don't like them, though.

You can turn them off and on independently for the track view and the console view. If you don't want them in the track view, turn them off, but they are extremely useful in the console view at the very least. You can also make them small or large independantly for the console view and the track view. You can even easily make your own track icons. Looking at a console view with 50 or 60 faders? IMO The track icons on the console view make mixing much nicer. The included icons are actually quite nice, very realistic, and not cartoonish or garish. The good thing is, it's up to the user as to where and when they want to employ track icons.
