playing dxi synth

i have a synth inserted and i record midi on the source track to play back in the synth. the midi plays back fine, i hear the synth. but, i can't hear the synth when recording the midi or just improvising on the keyboard. i'm looking for an extra midi setting that PA8 didn't have but can't find one. i'm able to play the same synths without a problem in psycle.

    help file:
    >When you play your MIDI controller you should hear the DXi through your sound card's outputs. If you don't, make sure you're >playing in the right range...

    no problem, the synth plays the full range

    >...a bank, patch, and Channel are selected; your monitor speakers or headphones are turned up;

    done. i can step edit midi and hear the synth on playback

    >...your controller is attached to your MIDI interface;

    done. i can record midi and play it back (just can't hear the synth when recording)

    <...and that none of the relevant tracks are muted.

    done!

    i've been thru this several times to no avail. what else is there??

    anyone else ever have this problem?

    Obviously something is not set up right or you could hear the DXi synth playing with the keyboard. Make sure that your (midi) in and ch(annel) aren't set to none. It is something to do with input if you can't hear the synth while playing but recorded midi plays back. Since you seem to be trying to do a Dxi synth, there will be two tracks - one for midi and an audio track that is assigned to an output that the midi synth plays back through.

    If you have HS2 or earlier, make sure you have the MIDI track selected. This enables MIDI pass-thru for the track - that means whatever is being recorded will also be sent on to the output. MIDI pass-thru only works for one track at a time, so you an only play one softsynth at a time.

    If you have SHS4, make sure the pass-thru is enabled. It's the little arrow-like symbol next to the MSR buttons. By default, it's set to auto-thru, which means MIDI pass-thru will be enabled if the track is selected. You'll see the symbol turn purple. To force it to be enabled, click on it until it turns green. You can turn on multiple softsynths this way, and play them all at the same time (layered).

    i wish the solution was as obvious. i've tried every channel/setting, nothing. it'll probably be simple in the end, until then it might as well be particle physics.

    The symptoms you describe sound like you may have Input Monitoring disabled. I'm not sure if you change this setting in the soundcard's control panel or through Home Studio.

    note to self: DON'T FORGET TO TURN "ECHO" ON IN MIDI TRACK!

    that was the culprit y'all. i can now hear the synth while recording and improvising.

    hey sinc,
    you and i were posting right about the same time, i didn't see yours last time here. that tip on layering synths will be useful.

    thx all!

    Some forums have an option to warn you when a response "sneaks in" ahead of your reply... Unfortunately, this forum doesn't...
